The feathers in the ears say long coat, but the rest of him looks more like a plush stock coat! He doesn't have the long feathers on the back of his legs!

This is why I have long said there is more to a long coat than a single gene. At the very least there are modifiers that affect the expression of the gene if not further supplementary genes that nobody bothered to look for since they were not a GSD person and viewed coat as a simple equation - on/off - which it might well be in other breeds just not the GSD.
All I can say is in many decades in the breed I have see dogs with ear tufts and nothing else or leg feathers only - sometimes front only. sometimes back, sometimes all 4 legs and everything in between that and a full blown coat that would make a rough collie ashamed not to have.
I have seen long flat coats, open long coats ( open is what some call plush a very incorrect term). Note all dogs described had undercoat. Also note that originally these dogs classified as koer 1 and only after 1968 moved to koer two then years later disqualified for economic reasons only to be brought back as a separate variety by the SV due to their enduring popularity.
Whether stock coat or long coat a dog WITHOUT undercoat has been disqualified from the start of the breed since they lack weather resistance.

Well Julie it looks as though you have a 'long enough' coat, to at least partly fit your requirement !
He is very attractive, from that pic, but I know exactly what Sunsilver feels !

Tail- not so much.

I have seen otherwise stock coats that got their ears trimmed before going in the ring. don't think I ever saw any this fuzzy though.

Yeah, come to think of it I have known a few adult stock coats with more hind limb feathering in cold weather ! Maybe it helps them sit on cold ground. ;-)
As for fluffy ears, I can't say I ever noticed that as a particular 'thing'; but then I have never taken a lot of notice of small coat differences between adults ... if I have seen it while e.g. grooming, I have forgotten.

Honestly I would not think there is going to be much difference to the length most of his coat is now; once they are past the point where all the 'puppy coat' is groomed out - and looks from your pic as though that could now be the case - which can be anything up to about one year of age, it does not actually 'grow' in length. (Sorry not to be more precise but it does vary so much from individual to individual, once they are past about their first half-year, what with genetics, weather conditions, extent and frequency of grooming ...) You might, as has been pointed out above, notice some difference in coat during cold weather periods. I would think the hair length along the topline and on his tail is pretty fixed by now. What do others reckon ?
