I had a coated dog, didnt handle extreme heat as well as my short coated dogs. Also had plenty of skin issues and would always pick up burr and mats and got snow balls on her paws in the winter.  Never again.
Pick a dog for workability not because he looks cute and fluffy or get a golden retriever.

Bravo22, Thank you for the response. Yes, all is good :)

I think some coated dogs have a fuller coat than others. I can't imagine doing SAR with a dog that has a coat like some of the German show line dogs, the wooly bear type! We go hiking a lot in the NC mountains, where there are lots of briars certain times of the year, and we never had a major problem with our previous long coated GSD (rescue, lines unknown). She had a medium long coat. My pup's dam does not have an extreme long coat either. She has the ear feathers, a moderate mane and a slightly longer coat.

Yes, Thanks Haz.  Workabilty will be the primary criteria.  I still love the coated GSD, but  it looks like not for SAR.
Bravo22, I just passed my sartech III exam, and ready for the other sartech courses.  I am now also a NASAR member.

Hello!
Longhaired dogs are really great.
They are not expensive to care if they are dirty and it dries,
then the dirt from even drops. They are very sturdy.
We have quite a lot of dogs, but from working lines, not from the high breeding, which have different fur.
You can look on our homepages ...

regards
Kerstin

IBCSD International Breeding Club for Shepherd-Dogs e. V.

I´m usually not someone blaming anybody, but right now you are selling dogs on this board.
I never heard about the IBCSD, I wasn´t able to find anything about this "breeding club" ( homepage, members, ...), I wasn´t able to find working titles on your working dogs, and the club address is identical with your home address?!?
It´s your choice what you are doing, but people should know, that your dogs are not bred within SV, RSV, VDH, or FCI, and that they might pay for pedigrees, they can´t use for showing, titling, and breeding within the major clubs.

Thanks Susie.  Maybe I am a little naive, but I did not read mittsommernachtswolf's post as trying to sell her dogs.  I read it as an opinion that longcoats were not that much trouble, and that working line coated dogs were sturdy and had different fur (I,m not sure what different fur means- perhaps mittssommernachtwolf can explain).  I posted that I was looking to find a K9 partner and needed advice. I am not intereted in breeding or pedigees, just workability.
I want to thank both Susie for the information, but I also want to thank mittssommernachtwolf's for her opinion.  I truly want to know if the working line long coats have the workability for SAR. Thanks all for your posts.

Wanted to clarify and correct misspelling.  I was not interested in breeding my dog. I am certainly interested in the dogs breeding, but it is not the primary consideration.  I also misspelled pedigree.

Cslc, don´t worry, my post was off topic, not directed to you.
I simply wondered about a German kennel called "Mittsommernachtswolf" I never heard about, and did some research.

A teammate of mine has a long coated WL GSD for cadaver work.  The coat is extra work and picks up dirt and brambles. She would not have got the dog but he was exceptional so she took him in spite of it. She does complain about it.
