 People nowadays DO NOT HAVE COMMON SENSE....

Well it is the same where I live. If a dog is in the wrong pasture with cows then it can be shot and you cant do anything about it. Dogs get run over by the UPS truck I know all this already and I still say you are way too protective in general. People lack common sense and I get that too. Hey if you want to keep doing it that way then great. Just if you ever bitch about having too many or not enough feed or not enough help or not being able to find enough homes,....I wouldnt feel any sympathy for you....perhaps for the dogs. 

Maybe I am pointing the finger at the wrong group. If the breeders are breeding these dogs that cant adjust to life on a normal farm with lots of animals and vehicles driving in and out and tractors running around then the GSD has truly evolved into a specialized breed with a niche in protection sports and police work.

I think that is sad!

How many dogs do you take when no one wants them? How many dogs have you placed? How much money did you donate to some rescue group? We probably already know the answers to these questions.

Until you have been involved in the situation, know how hard most rescues work to make expenses, make sure the dog will go to a forever home, I say you don't have any right to criticize. All rescues have guidelines they follow, in all countries I am familiar with. Most good rescues have those same guidelines because they have already seen the problems or learned from experience. I don't know many rescues who place dogs where there are not proper fences. In some cases, yes, I think a dog can live in a farm situation, but the owner has to be aware of how GSDs/dogs behave and know they are experienced enough to see dog does not get in trouble. What good is it for rescue group to take, feed, perhaps spend money on medical needs of a dog and then put it in a situation where it ends up being shot, lost, run over etc.? I say good for rescues that have rules. And problem begins with people who breed many litters...yes, you point your finger in the wrong direction. And lack good sense....cars/trucks kill dogs as do guns. In my place, dog chasing cows is dead. And everyone understands this. Dogs are kept in good confinement or with owner.

You know, I'm going to have to agree with SportySchGuy. My mom bought a year old GSD from the paper, the lady who owned it realized she wasn't able to care for it (she was an older lady). My mom brought the dog home, to a no fenced 14 acre area, and the dog is fine. UPS comes all the time, the dog moves out of the way. They had some pigs to raise for slaughter, the dog never harmed them at all, even though she went into their pen all the time. If GSDs are turning into dogs who run away, slaughter livestock, and lack doggie common sense, I'm switching breeds. We're not talking about hounds, but German shepherd dogs. Oh well, my opinion is just that, MY opinion.

Unfortuently, I think some people do go to breeders, both responsible and byb, because the shelters are so strict. (Not to say yours is, Krazy Bout K9s, just in general). Not to screen would be silly, but to put restrictions where your average person can't get one isn't a good idea either. I've noticed homes with fences are less likely to walk their dog, and more likely to leave them outside unsupervised (Not all, just more it seems to me). I do love shelters for what they do, however.

Anyway, newbieGSD, I talked to the owner of the momma dog, and she still hasn't really decided if she wants to get rid of her. That one site someone posted, save our shepherds, has some very nice GSDs nearby, including one in Nashville. I bookmarked that page, in case I meet another person who wants a shepherd, lol.

You know what really drives me nuts is that you with all your rules about protecting and rescuing these dogs are actually just continuing the cycle. Its a self fufilling prophecy when the people who first want to adopt a dog and give a dog that is already out there a home will balk at the rediculous rules and just go buy a dog from a breeder which keeps driving the market. We need fewer dogs bred out there but when people willing to adopt cant ....what do you think they are going to do???? Just not get a dog??? LOL

Im not saying there arent a ton of idiots out there who shouldnt have a dog. Im just saying the system isnt working when it is harder to adopt a dog than buy one.

Yes, it is also sad that so many people, including many here, breed dogs and they don't give one damn where the dog goes as long as they get money for the dog. That is the real issue. You act like you have been refused a dog. I wonder why.

Throwing in my .02 with a story about a "rescue" in WA that refused to give a lady back her own dog after they sprung it from a pound.  The owner was visiting someone in the area, the dog got loose and ended up in the shelter.    These self-rightous snobs refused to give the dog back, even after the family said they would pay all the costs.  They lied and said the dog was in agony from bad teeth, then one reason after another why they would not return the dog.  Made a lot of people angry and is a perfect example of control freak rescues that care more about the control than the dog.


After a long fight and arbitration, the family got their dog back and the nitwit from the rescue was exsposed for the lunatic witch she is.

I heard of a similar situation in WA, except the people left their dog in the shelter till it was ready to be PTS, said she couldn't afford to get the dog out, left it in there for about 2 weeks...then after the rescue pulled the dog, heading to deaths door, the idiot people wanted their dog back....would you give them their dog back in that instance????

A rescue is located in Knoxville, TN and may be able to help find a GSD for the person that you know in Knoxville that is looking. We are pulling two female GSDs from our shelter this week that are both HW positive. We already have an approved home for one, but will need to find a home for the other girl once she has recovered. We also have a large male that we are trying to help rehome. The owners recently adopted him from a friend, but discovered that his daughter is allergic to him.
