Too heavy for a young dog esp, what is that 94 pounds?

by jettasmom on 24 November 2010 - 04:11

Very nice looking young male, he does look heavy but that could be from his coat or pic. Either way very handsome.

Super more dogs should be like this, Too many dogs without that type of pigment and bone structure these days.

A large and substantial male with good bone and a lovely expression, dark eye and ear set. The upper arm could have a little more angle (helping to tuck the elbow back) but the lay of the shoulder looks to be ok. A touch shorter leg would also be nice. Good pasterns with great feet though.

He does appear to be a little "chesty" both forward of the shoulder and in width - a barrel chest will also contribute to pushing the elbows out & forward. Nice height to length proportions.

I'm sure you can also see both the shortness and flatness of the croup - the fourth photo clearly shows this. There could also be a little more angulation in the knee joint - imagine the angle between the upper & lower leg being less in the first two photos. And again I feel the hocks could be a touch shorter with a firmer joint.

Having said that he does have that "old style" stance that is often indicative of a fine temperament - see Pragers comments in thread www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/forum/43976.html

Another thing to mention is that if you compare photos of the dog as a pup and as an adult you can see that the structure doesn't change a great deal as they mature and I always find it astounding that the differences between a well structured dog and a beautifully structured one are so small but so tough to breed and maintain.

Enjoy you dog and don't you go spoiling him with too much food. As I always say, exercise 'em more than you imagine and feed 'em less than you imagine.

Ibrahim, a very impressive dog. Congratulations.

I remember when you first came to this forum, asking every question about the GSD and trying to gain knowledge. It seems you have done very well in sorting out the good advice offered here from all the nonsense. IMO, you have made very good choices for your dogs.

best,
Rik
