Beetree had it right, although its a comment on breeding practices in general, not just color. Standards, schmandards, right?

Have to agree with KCzaja to a point.  The obsession with colour in many breeds is what contributes to the narrowing of the gene pool and the GSD must surely rank as one of the worst on that score, particularly in the show ring where any dog that isn't the ubiquitous 'black & red' rarely gets a look in, at least here in the UK and Germany.

That said, this thread isn't so much about breeding for colour but understanding anomalies when they occur unintentionally.

This was such an interesting thread, the tool box of genes can do strange things. I hope the puppy grows up happy and healthy.

Hi!
I do not know if anyone if interested but the little panda is growing and healthy, looks just like a normal shepherd except the colours! We took some peoples advice and got them DNA`d (her and her dad) and it confirms what I already knew that they are father and daughter. And some people think that this colouring is just a really big white patch but it really isnt! its completely different, and she has not started to darken whatsoever I do have pictures: there is a picture of her brother at 4.5 months old and about 55lbs or more, she was about 35 lbs at 4 months.

Pretty cool! Thanks for giving an update. Wow, nice to have that proof positive in your hand, I bet! Those crazy genes, look what they've done. The pups look just great by the way!

She is a cutie. The markings on her face make her look like a boarder collie. Hope you have fun with her.

I love that pup!!!!   What a doll.   Given the right health and joint checks,  I'd breed her in a heart beat.  The breed needs diversity.  The "standard" should not stand in the way of the breed overall.  The standard was made for the breed, not the breed for the standard.  When the standard holds the breed back, it is the standard that needs to be changed.

Flack away...  LOLOL!

Someone sell me that dog so I can breed it, LOL!
