Thank you all for your kind words and wishes.  It means a lot to me to know that all of you wish us great success, and that I have access to some of the world's best breeders, dog trainers, and owners to talk to and ask questions of.  It's a special group of people that love this breed.

Thanks a bunch!

are her eyes hazy or clear?

Oakley's eyes are hazy.  The vet that spayed her told Steph that her pupils do not react to light at all, but Steph said she though she detected the slightest reaction to light when Oakley is in bright sunlight.  Why do you ask?

This picture, though taken with a flash, shows pretty close what her eyes look like in normal light.

Sometimes it's hard to remember that she's blind.  She doesn't act like it when she's outside, but inside, she sometimes bumps things, especially kitchen chairs.

does she have cataracts?

did she get some really strong soap in her eyes that casued damage?

did a bacteria do this damage?

maybe you could take her to a specialist?

Crys and Sitas Mom,
Oakley's eyes are not hazy at all...what you are seeing is the reflection of light...her eyes are gorgeous brown. The center of the eye does not contract with light, only slightly in very bright direct sunlight. Did not see the cotton ball falling, no menace response. Her eyes are bright...it just looks hazy (the center) because of the light reflecting back...her eye is constantly dilated...

Email or call if you have any further questions, and yes she "sees" better outside than inside...although here she didn't bump into hardly anything...

No cataracts,

The first vets response was ....Delayed PLR. Rotational nystygmas with stimulation. Cotton ball test non-rewarding. A: Vision impaired; unknown eti9ology but rule outs include congenital defect, intracranial injury, cerebral lesion or an infectious etiology.. Without further diagnostics it is not possible for me to determine the cause of this puppy's blindness. Due to medical condition, I recommend that the puppy be returned to the breeder.

There is an eye specialist in Spokane, a Dr. Yakely (sp.) she can take her there...she really gets around quite good as she is though. and I wouldn't want to make her worse...anyhow...

Steph,

She's doing pretty well in the house.  It's just my kitchen chairs that she tends to bump into.  She doesn't run into walls, the couch, or doors.  If it's solid, she seems to sense it, but if it's not, it's harder for her.  For the most part, everyone who's seen her asks if she's really blind, because they can't tell.

Frankly, I don't care.  I love her, and to me, she's perfect, even when she's got my pantleg clamped in her teeth.  If I go into another room, and she doesn't hear me because she's sleeping, I'll hear her whining, and the whining gets closer, and closer, until she comes round the corner and touches me with her nose or shoulder, just to know I'm there.  Then she lays down right there, usually across my feet.  How could anyone not love this pup?  She's too sweet!

She's going to be a gorgeous dog when she's grown, and she won't be handicapped, not really.  She's not handicapped now. If someday, her vision comes back, then great.  If not, big deal.

Crys

And yes, her eyes are so bright and full of life...The only one who knows she is blind is us!
