Naelik

At 90lb at his age your dog is Fat, i bet you can get hold of a handful of loose skin, fat is in the insides not outside, Oversize visually then people say the subject is Fat,  but still it is inside,

a bit of gentle excersise rwo or three times a day not over do him till he statrs looking more spritly, and cut his food down Two and a half cups that you feed him is wrong anyway,

My Cup may be smaller than your cup then it will carry less weight in food DO not go by cups when you feed a dog, IF you are not experinced feeding dogs, and it sounds like you are not,  then FEED by weight of food that way after say giving him 350grams you can put it into a cup and see how many cups it makes, then feed it in two feeds a day, Meaning half the total weight in one feed, and the other half in the evening, if he looks for more after eating what you give him then do not give way to him

IMO vets are like GP's, they are a "jack of all trades, masters of none"!!  They're great for the everyday stuff like vaccines and general ailments and should stick to exactly that!!  I had a vet recently tell me my GSD was suffering heat exhaustion which in his words is "common in GSD's"....turns out the dog had a tumour on his spleen!!

If you're in anyay concerned go see a specialist.

Every so often Zach would yalp when playing (jumping mostly).  (He'll be 11 months on 5/7/09 & he's 90 lbs) I wasn't sure if it was excitement or pain.  He just started doing this w/in the last couple of weeks.  So I went to the vet on Saturday to have him checked out and when she was examining him she ripped him apart

Hi Naelik,

From my understanding from your post,  Zach must be 8.5 months old?

I think pups can vary so much in weight. Really it's best to feel a pup and to gage whether they are overweight that way.

Don't worry about the leggy comments from your vet, most pups can go through that leggy stage at one time or another.

Just a thought. Re the "yalp", is it possible that Zach could be excited and he is letting out a high pitched, squeaky bark. My girl has different types of barks, a high pitched one where she is excited and playful and a really deep bark when she is being protective of the house and sees someone walking past.

I hope that there is nothing for you to worry about.

Kindest regards.:D

EVERY GSD puppy "might" be dysplastic. Most 11 month old males don't even know where there feet are most of the time. Come to think of it, neither do I.

One local vet pronounced that all BLACK Shepherds were Belgians... White German Shepherds were part wolf... and that Alsations were the police dogs.

Yikes!  I'm curious - this wouldn't happen to have been in TX, would it?

Why does everyone keep saying a 90lb puppy is FAT? Maybe he is 30 inches at the shoulder? Doesn't look overly fat in the pic I saw. Any vet that gives a diagnosis without a test or x-rays is just blowing it out their ass. I could have taken that stab in the dark and charged you for it too!

My routine vet pronounces all my dogs and pups "nice, great temperament, but too skinny." I try to tell her they are in perfect condition, perfect weight, but so far all she does is offer me a breeder discount on that crappy Science Diet dogfood she sells in the reception area. Ha ha ha.

Seeing how I can't get the server to upload my pics - please let me know if this works....
(I was tricky & changed my avatar - I know it's not big but @ least you can see the pic here on the website)

Oh and he was 27 inches @ the withers @ 7 months....haven't measured him recently

Thanks everyone for your opinions!  ;)

I think its time to check the accuracy of the scale that says that dog weighs 90 lbs. Dog isn't obese. Might be very tall, hence high weight?

If that is the Pup in Naeliks Avatar then i say it is overweight, you only have to look at is girth to see it is carrying far too much weight, the size of its body to its legs is out of proportion, and that is because it is fed too much food and not enough exersise to match it

I hope all the dogs over there are not the same, for you are doing them no favours

Steve
