The emergency chain idea is a good one. Its not like you're leaving the dogs unattended while you change a tire or wait for a tow truck.

...i use 1/4 inch plastic coated cable..u bolts.. brass swivel snaps..placed around a pole cemented in the ground  or a tree.etc so the hund can make a complete circle..no entanglement..i put a rubber hose on the base end of the cable.to keep the cable from wearing down..i also use the snaps with the squared end rather than round ..they last longer....i have about 7 or 8 of these placed on my property..keep some in my vehicle..not for permanent. tie out .but great for a few hours.. when i was young......dumd and full of .....rum..gotcha.i used a chain..no good
