This morning I phoned Air Canada and Northwest Airlines to find flights for 1 pup going from Canada to the US, and one dog going from the US to Canada.   Air Canada did not have any suitable flights. Nothing said about cross border restrictions. Northwest had told me that a directive was handed down disallowing them from accepting any flights into the US from Canada as per the TSA's regulations. It was however okay to ship from the US to Canada still.   Confused, as this was the first I had of it, I hung up the phone scratching my head and did some research. There was some info available stating all cross-border travel was suspended.   I phoned Northwest back and spoke with a different lady asking for more information, where the directive came from, asking to speak with the person who handed down the directive, etc. She knew NOTHING. Did not know how long, or why.   I phoned the Canadian Kennel Club. They know nothing of this.   I phoned TSA. They know nothing of this, and furthermore stated that they cannot govern international travel at all, only domestic, and therefor, have no idea what this is about, and suggested I talk with Customs and Border Protection Agency. She said news would also be posted on their website www.cbp.gov. I checked their website and no mention of this anywhere.  I was going to phone them and wait on hold, but with long distance and 18 people in the queue, I don't have the time to speak with someone about it right now. The phone number is 703-526-4200   So far, my research has led me to believe that there is no such ruling that anyone can see?!   Janessa Friedrich Kennels www.friedrich-kennels.com

 Sitasmom,

Let me be blunt. You are ignorant about current shipping regulations. There are already in place regulations that require people to go through an intermediary like PetAir, Gradlyn etc., if they are not already a licensed broker. Yes, it costs money to pay one of these firms. It is done to make certain that ALL regulations and requirements are met PRIOR to someone arriving at an airport with a dog to ship unattended, and see that the dog does not meet the requirements. It is done to make sure the dog has been properly evaluated for shipment so that the dog doesn't die in transit.

Why don't you stop posting crap? I get around the requirement because I ship and receive and I KNOW THE RULES. Do you?

The answer is obvious. There is NOTHING posted here that is valid about any kind of new onerous requirement.

Janessa, ship your dog. This is all crap someone has posted when they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

I just made arrangements to ship a dog this morning.

Ok, I called Continental earlier today.  This flap has to do with the need to use a pet shipping company, like the ones used in Germany, for importation.  Continental will ship, but wants people to use these intermediary companies when importing a dog into this country.

Thanks to everyone for their research.  Hodie, no offense taken.

 Micky D,

No offense ever meant. I just think people ought to do their homework (and not just on this issue). The airlines have long preferred and, in some cases, required the use of an intermediary shipper just because people (as evidenced from this thread), don't have a clue about how to go about following the regs and rules. That costs the airline money and it may compromise the good care of the dog.

Micky D is correct.  The paragraph posted here and on the gsd.com site talks about importation of dogs into the US.  Gradlyn has been recommending using a customs broker, such as Barthco, for quite some time.  This is for dogs shipped as cargo, not as AVI (excess baggage).

My puppy is supposed to be shipped to me from Toronto to San Francisco in the beginning of March.  The flight is on Air Canada and as of today they still had not received word of this, but when I saw this posted on another forum I became concerned and started making some inquires.  Air Canada and United are still shipping pets as usual.  Delta (NWA) has stopped and is requiring that dogs are shipped through a customs broker for freight forwarding service.  The rep. at Delta cargo actually read me the letter that they got from TSA.  I called Continental and they got the letter too  & have suspended private shipping of pets, in fact on another forum a breeder states that she got a call from Continental today cancelling 3 booked flights.  I tried calling TSA, and they didn't even know about the rule, they transferred me to someone's voice mail box, which  I have called back 3 times and still no response.

I am not sure if Air Canada will still be shipping when my pup is scheduled to fly or not, in case they won't ship him I am looking into alternatives- but there don't seem to be many.  Customs brokers don't seem to want to talk to individuals, just large companies, and the only animal transport company to respond to my emails just sent me a quote that is 3 times the cost of the flight- and this is with our crate, our health cert. drop off at toronto airport and pickup in SFO.

If anyone knows of a reasonably priced broker, or a pet transort service who can handle this, please post it here- this is just absurd!

Wow- I tried to post this as a reply to the thread about shipping dogs and the TSA regulation and it ended up posting as a new thread- very sorry about that!
