When the man I rescued Ranger from first got him, he tied the dog up with a choke chain. He didn't notice it was hurting the dog until the chain was embedded in the flesh. My step-father helped him remove it: spray some topical anesthetic, yank out a few inches, then repeat. He never took the dog to the vet, and this is probably why the dog's leather collar stunk so bad I had to throw it in the trash can. The collar had been put on overtop of the wounds from the chain.
I posted this on another dog board, and a lady who was a vet tech said I wouldn't believe how often she's seen this sort of injury come in to her clinic.
There's a LOT of ignorant people out there, sadly.
My late husband didn't know any better, either, in spite of having had a dog when he was a kid. I had to get after him about it, and teach him the choke collar was for training/walking ONLY.

Yellow and trailrider,,
If you KNEW they tied their previous dog out on a choke would you sell them a puppy? Not if they lied, not if you didn't know- If you KNEW they did. Would you then sell them a puppy? Even if you sent instructions with the puppy would you still sell them one of yours if you KNEW they tied the last dog out on a choke? It's a very straightforward question. What is the huge moral and ethical leap here?? It's not simply about tying them out it's more importantly about tying them up with a choke!! How can you do anything BUT condemn that?? Talk about a WTF moment!!???!!
And, obviously a dog can bite through a fence if it wants to. What in the world has this got to do with tying out with a DAMN CHOKE??? And I just gotta ask this: If a dog can chew through any fence if it wants to, exactly what kind of rope do you trust to tie it out with???? The kind of massive chains tow truck drivers use? Good grief. It is just a ridiculus statement to say a dog can chew through a fence if it wants and this makes it okay to tie a dog out.
And if "Many a person can rear a pup or gsd without a fence" do these sound like the kind of people who would go to that kind of trouble or have that kind of training sense? These are people who tie him out on a choke, unsupervised, and have not said at all that it was a mistake.
And it is an assumption to say they learned their lesson the hard way. No indication anywhere that they learned anything at all. If that is indeed, the case then they most emphatically should NOT own another living being until they learn more. We all DO make mistakes. When those mistakes endanger another life we do NOT have the inherent right to keep endangering more little lives. Period.
This is all mind blowing. I NEVER thought I would hear people on this board defend tying a dog out with a choke.

Yellowrose:
"Many a dog in foreign countries are raised on and stay tethered so knock it off...the Chain and the choke collar didnt kill this dog.....get off of it "
Next statement: "I dont believe in chaining a dog either and just found out one of mine just died on a chain in a backyard in Longview ,Tex and I told him until he got a kennel or a fenced back or side yard, I'll not sell him another dog"
Yet is willing to give a donation to THIS family another pup??? Believe me, if a pup I would have bred was killed on a chain in the backyard there is no F$%&ing WAY I would say "Many a dog in foreign countries are raised on and stay tethered so knock it off...the Chain and the choke collar didnt kill this dog.....get off of it "
Yeah, if you're telling people to get off it then you are DEFINATELY defending it.
Trailrider: "So it seems to me it doesn't make any difference if your dogs are in a fenced yard, kennel, or tied, if someone wants to shoot them they most certainly can." I repeat the point is not that they tied the dog but they did it with a choke. This most definately DOES matter and can NOT EVER be put in the same category as a kennel, fenced yard or even tying with a flat collar.
Your own reply to Laporte's comment about tying out on a choke: "people who live in glass houses should not throw stones! I guess I can take it that LaPorte and seriously have never made a mistake in their lives! Wasn't it one of yous that said hind sight is 20/20? I can honestly say that I have made mistakes in my life!" Certainly sounds like advocating giving another pup to people who would do this. Yeah, sounds like defending it.

I would not sell a pup to somebody I knew would tie them out on a choke chain. Period.

Greatestgsd: "It breaks my heart to even think this poor dog had to suffer like he did." But it's not suffering to be tied in such a way that when he did run and lunge to protect his home he would choke himself out? Or perhaps choke himself out while trying to escape gunshots? Obviously this is a situation that just CRIES OUT for a replacement pup. Good grief.
