Liz, DP, thanks for all the info.  I'll have a word with my Vet, it's clearly not very common... in any breed of dog!  Let's hope it stays that way!

I think we have addressed the health issues for now. We should not be distracted by rare and none testable illness/defects, we do however need to bring some pressure to the BC to look carefully at the mental state of our breed and heed the words of Herr Meyer, ie the GSD is a WORKING DOG and consideration MUST be given to that in the breeding, What is the point in us breeding dogs that remain healthy for twenty years if they are lazy, and or have insecurity and shyness built in! i personally would like a active physical and mentally stable dog able to be a pet or work or show for 8/10 years than a weak craven lazy coward for 15 years.

If the thread continues only on health issue can someone with the knowledge to start another thread please do so titled

When will the Breed Council of the UK seriously consider the GSD s character and temperament, or something like that

So REASON, I take it from your above post health issues are unimportant to you!!!!  OH yes as long as we have people like you in the breed we will certainly see improvements,NOT!!!  The topic of this thread is breed improvement suggestions is better health not an improvement? Thank the lord you are a minority in your thinking.  liz

Reason posted:

In schutzhund protection is NOT mandatory for qualifications you can now take any one of the diceplines for instance once you have made BH you can make TR1 which is the sch1 track only and this qualification will be registered in your record book by the same token you can make OB1, TR2 etc etc without protection you can not however make a koreung

And you can also get an FH1 and FH2 which are just tracking titles.  My Weimaraner got these and she has no interrest in bitework at all! :D

And as he also said, dogs are disqualified for being out of control, and most of us work hard for them to be UNDER control.

Langhaar, thanks for the info.  There's rather a lot of titles, is there a book I can buy that gives all the details?  It's something that should be read in bed me thinks!

I'm glad you work hard to ensure that your dogs are under control... I've never seen any Sch trials in this country only at the Sieger and then, only manwork that is less than impressive due to the general lack of control.  I intend to make the effort to visit South Valley... now that I know it's not in Wales!

Reason, didn't Sue B come up with a pretty good test?

I found this very helpful when I started researching schutzhund.

Dear God Langaar, who writes these things... it has to be a bloke, right?  "Reason" and DP gave me a couple of sites too.  Give me "Nosework" by John Cree any day!  It's no good, I need a proper book that I can read (in bed) and refer back to when necesary!  I know... I know... the Germans "make" great dogs but they don't write great books do they?

Funky munky/Liz

What on earth are you on. I didn't come on here to defend anybody but now you start on Reason.  Where did Reason suggest that health matters were of no concern.  Reason, did however, suggest that the mental health of our breed was equally important, not more so or less so. We have been considering the health test we have available to us at this present time and the suggestion of this thread was to incorparate these into some form of two tier registration.  It dosen't mean we can not sit back when there are other issues that need looking at including the mental health of our breed.

This is the comment you directed at Reason "The topic of this thread is breed improvement suggestions is better health not an improvement? Thank the lord you are a minority in your thinking." You have to be the rudest person I have come across in a long time.

JesseJames, i am not on anything my dear, and in reasons last post he gave the impression he was not keen on talking only health.I personally think it is very vey important.I do not consider myself the rudest person here, read some of the past posters, but you are entitled to your opinion. What i am is HONEST,when it comes to health issues, something i believe is not abundant with a lot of breeders today.IMO until there is total honesty things can only get worse!!!!!!!  liz
