I have to agree that the left is most definitely angry about Sotomayor.  She is much too conservative for the left and they are angry at Obama for the choice.  Consult for example Jonathan Turley, Professor of Constitutional Law, George Washington University School of Law.

The right does not like Sotomayor either.  If you are confused about the possibility that the far right AND the far left can simultaneously object to a Centrist like Sotomayor, then  you fail to understand the basics of politics.  If you are acting confused about the statement that the left is upset with Sotomayor, you are only listening to right wing media -- left wing media made a very big issue of this.  If you missed this, it is proof you are not watching a broad range of political viewpoints -- you are getting all your news from Fox news, Glen Beck, and Rush Lambaugh.

The left will move very aggressively to try to get Obama to choose a real leftist to replace John Paul Stevens.  They do not want another centrist such as Sotomayor.

Again, if all of this is news to you, you are not only badly educated, but you are hearing from only one side of the media.

If you feel the need to capitalize, boldface, and add idiotic emoticons to your writing, you are not fooling people who read and watch the media widely.  You need to read and watch the WSJ and Fox on the right, the NYT and mainstream media in the center, and at least one leftist paper/mag and MSNBC.  Otherwise, you're just a silly parrot.

What an amazing moment!

BabyEagle and Maggie Mae have both decided that they are so conversant with the left wing of the US political spectrum that they can have a laugh over what the eft does and does not believe!

So, you two, how did you come by your leftish credentials when we weren't looking?

Or did you completely misunderstand my point, which was that the left (not you) are angry about Sotomayor being a centrist.  To Attila the Hun right wingers, she is certainly on the left.  To true leftists, she is a centrist.  In my case, my very first reaction to her (logged on my Twitter account on May 24): "So impressive, but she treats evidence that violates defendant protections as admissible if gathered in good faith.  Worrisome."

And I am only left-center.  The real left was very upset.

Sorry for the typos -- by pc is not allowing me to edit.

To allow the admissibility of evidence gathered by good faith law enforcement that nonetheless violates civil rights is not acceptable to the left, to the ACLU, or to honest constitutionalists.  Sotomayor was an Asst DA -- left wingers start in Legal Aid, not in the DA's office.

You just lost your minds when you heard a brown woman was nominated.  Or perhaps her view that as a latina she would bring a unique perspective set you off?

If you understood the law, you would understand that Sotomayor could be objectionable to ACLU types, and if you followed the papers and the media broadly you would have heard this many times!

But somebody said that already.

And I have not read Schapiro, but in my classes all points of view are rigorously honored.

* "Obama taught constitutional law at the U of Chicago and according to any objective criteria appears to have a deep and abiding understanding of and respect for the Constitution." *
What does that proof ?! I, to any objective criteria  have a deep and abiding understanding of and respect for communism and I hate it , nay I loath it with every cell of my body:)

MaggieMae -- ok, I'm impressed that you are open about this.

I think the easiest way to get a leftwing perspective is to listen to Keith Olbermann (to my left, certainly!) on MSNBC.  He can be disrespectufl (like Bill O'Reilly on the right) and from my POV he gets carried away.  But you hear the crying anguish of the left when you listen to him.

The Onion (http://www.theonion.com/content/index) is a satirical, unorthodox, usually left wing paper.

The Atlantic is left-center.

Yes! is a left wing journal focused on social and economic justice. http://www.yesmagazine.org/

Extra! is also focused on justice and equality. http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=4

These papers think the New York Times is a right wing rag!

Anyway, I am sorry I lost my cool up there.  You have every right to think Sotomayor is too far to the left for your tastes.   But you are not remotely right that the left likes her.  Nor are you right that the Court was not moved rightward by Sotomayor from Souter, who she replaced.  Souter would never have allowed violations of civil liberties to prosecute criminals to keep order in society!  Sotomayor, again, is an ex DA.  She just happens to be a latina -- a demographic that is traditionally socially conservative.

The Nation is another good left wing mag: http://www.thenation.com/

On the right, The National Review is an extreme mag: http://www.nationalreview.com/

The Wall Street Journal, of course, is right-center.

And of course Commentary is both right wing and pro Israel (which I am, mostly): http://www.commentarymagazine.com/

Neither the right nor the left wing would agree, but centrists agree that the following are really centrist politically, with high quality reporting and analysis:

Center (according to Centrists! -- leftists think these are rightwing and rightists think these are lefty)

The Economist : http://www.economist.com/

and

The Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/

I agree that many of my academic colleagues read only left and center, and a few read only right and center.  I am one of the view who read left, center and right almost every day.  But that doesn't make me objective!!!

Just informed!

I'm only human!
