DP, 'twas the gist & I meant no offence! Does everything have to degenerate into a bloody battle? I'm doing my bit as promised and you've done very well so far, by keeping quiet and ignoring much of what's been said. Let it go for God's sake, there's been enough crud on here to last a lifetime!

In spite of my serious reservations, I spent many hours preparing the proposals, for the potential benefit of our breed. It has, as I expected, resulted in more personal attacks on me and my dogs, by anonymous scum on this board. I ask you all to remember this FACT, and to understand why I will NOT repeat this mistake again. Scum is damaging our breed, and stopping those few that can help it. There are too few in our breed that can write such proposals, our breed can ill afford to have them turn their backs on it.

Brady Bee, again much of what you say is right but we have to start somewhere and if you can't test for a particular ailment??? HD, as I understand it, the mode of inheritance is polygenic, which means it's erratic, yes you can get dysplastic puppies from low score parents but the more low scores on the pedigree, the less chance there is of the puppy being dysplastic... this has to be worth aiming for!
Yes. I agree the age of a breeding male should be looked at. All the old excuses of, "you have to give him one bitch while he's very young, or he will not cover a bitch when he's older", really don't carry much water do they?
I wish you had contributed earlier Brady Bee.

Brady Bee: Their are enough "failings" in our breed which can be tackled with a fair chance of success given the effort. The "failings" that you raise border on the "impossible to resolve" - Therefore you can "safely" raise the same "failings" for the next 50 years, its what is called a "crusade". I have no objection to you or anyone else having a "crusade", but I would suggest you balance your pursuit of the impossible by also pursuing the possible. Maybe you can write some "proposals" on your "crusade" issues?

I wish too that I had contributed earlier. I have much to say, but like many others, are not prepared to take the bashing that goes along with airing one's views and opinions.
Mr Payne
I applaud your intellegent proposals, but I for one am not "scum," and I disagree that those so called "scum" are damaging the breed. I believe Breeders are , and have, and will continue to damage our wonderfull Breed. Maybe some should try to downsize their kennel and go back to basics, back to the beginning and remember why they fell in love with the German shepherd Dog in the first place, and that is not a dig at you Mr Payne, I know of bigger kennels than yours, so please don't take it personally, and please don't tar all annonymous posters with the same brush.
I repeat, I applaud your efforts.

I'm starting to think that this thread should be closed. Many ideas have been put forward and from the different sides of the breed, pet, show and working.
Suggestions have been put forward for a template for a blank playing field for all sides except the wrong colours so no one has been excluded.
I have spent hours on the phone today with a lady who has had the unfortunate experience of buying a poorly puppy and getting a breeder who "doesnt give a S**T" about the puppies she sells. The breeder is KC registered and the dogs are hip scored so she fits the basic's - the improvements that have been suggested will hopefully go a whole heap further towards making it harder for these money grabbers to do well.
If anything on this thread goes out there and means that another puppy and new owner will not be suffering then all the work people hae put in will not be for nothing.
I love many breeds and currently home more than just GSDs and if the suggestions get embraced and introduced by the KC then I will be over the moon and all the comments sent to me both on line and by PM will be worth everything. I am not someone who allows herself to be lead by the nose blindly. I stand up for what I believe in and am happy to cross others who see as stupid and naive. I want more oldies like I have at home who at 12+ years is a bit tatty but has no breed illness, yes he is stiff but no more than other breeds at his age. I dont want to hear of people crying over a 10 week puppy living at the vet and might not make it, or of a 6month old being put down due to hips being beyond help.
I want transparency with open records available online for all to see, for breeders to show their health screening and progeny numbers and where possible encourage pet owners to undertake their own health screening and to advise the breed when dogs die prematurely and why.
Please put differences aside, this thread is not about English, German, pet, show or working its about all of them.
