I taught my dog to jump on any surface at any height just by putting his favorite ball on the table or surface I want him to get on. But then of course he has a real good drive for his ball. The very first time he jumped right up without hesitation. Now I just tap on the table or tailgate of my truck and he jumps up. I am not a professional, this just worked for me.

To follow up on what Sammy is saying and also to circle back to the original point of this post, for my dogs 'Hupp' means 'Hupp' no matter the surface and it was easy to teach with a tap and praise.

As well as going over the hurdle and the A-frame, I also hupp them up into the crate in the truck or into the car.  I can hupp them up onto the exam table at the vets and even the bathing tub at the groomers (and they HATE those tubs).   It was one of the easiest commands to work with, just the use of a ball or a treat and praise.

This makes me think, Fawn that you've unconsciously proofed a command that is running counter to the idea of 'hupp'.  Either trying to keep them off the furniture, away from the fence or your own concern over their jumping and their joints, there is a conflict surrounding this command.  I would sit down and go back over everything you have taught them and everything you have corrected them for and see if you can identify the conflict.

Martin is a martial arts instructor so he always thinks in demo mode (he'd do well in the "Show Me" state). He always jumps on or over something with the dogs the first time he asks them to do it. This really helps a timid dog like Senta since she sees that Martin isn't avoiding (or going around) the obstacle. When he went over the IPO jump the first time with her, the entire class cheered. I love when he jumps into the back of the pickup with Bosco - Bosco huffs with excitement. :)

WE DID IT.    WE DID IT.         Both Max and Cirberus are now jumping up on anything I ask.   They are even jumping up on pic nic tables.   Thanks everyone for the great suggestions.

LOL, I use whatever I have.  Picnic table it is.

Max and I went to a play ground yesterday.  He was all over everything, wobbly bridge, castle, tables, tunnels, whatever we could find, we climbed on or under.  We haven't tried a slide yet.  Maybe next time.  We were proofing, found a few things to work on; not getting worried if there is activity behind us is one.

If the weather holds, Cirberus will go to play ground next weekend too.  I need to figure out how to take both dogs and still work with them separately.  The play ground is about 45 miles away and I really do not want to make 2 trips.

Here is Max on one of the pic nic tables at the play ground.   We went for our 2nd time and he took everything in stride.  He even went down the slide a couple of times with me (wish I had pictures; kind of hard to get a picture and slide down at the same time).

Here is Cirberus on one of the wobbly walks.  This is her first time to a play ground.  She had a ball.  I was quite surprised about how readly she took everything, even the tunnels.  We didn't try the slide; maybe next time.  We are leaning more and more towards agility fun.  Once she gets the idea, there is no stopping her.
