Two Moons

Nature's tool for controling insects like ticks is fire.   We dont let the forest burn anymore because we live in or near it.  The government comes in once a year here to do controlled burns on a study plot but this year it was too windy.  I could burn but I think my nieghbors would be pissed if I burnt down their house's..lol   I do burn off the leaves in small area's but its not enough.     I just got two new tick bites today.  Didn't use the permanon..zlskgraliruglziurglsziurg!

Oh well.   Looking for the blow dryer.

I alternate between the two.  I like that Frontline is waterproof, but it doesn't repell the fleas and is slower at killing them.  Advantix will kill them quicker and repells great, but is only water resistant.  Also I get a greasy spot from the Advantix.

I would not suggest Biospot either!  I just think that the Frontlines/Advantix are way safer and work better.  It's worth the extra money.

For a "quick" kill of fleas on your dog.  Capstar is a good, safe, pretty cheap source.  The fleas that are currently on the dog/cat drop off dead within an hour.  It does nothing to repel, but helps if you've gotten infested.

A vet tech told me she likes the frontline because it will last two monthes and can save alot money.

Anyone else hear this?

I think it depends on your area and what the particular bugs are used to.  I get good results with advantix but may at somepoint have to switch over to frontlineplus.  I used BioSpot about 10yrs ago when I was stationed in germany and found that it worked better at the time than the frontline did against ticks.  (of course I'm the person who believes in using the flea and tick shampoo on myself if I find a creepy crawly- hey I'm not licking myself and I outweigh the dog by never you mind how much.)  I definetly believe it is better to use something than to have to fumigate another vehicle for ticks.

Useful thread as Jack has recently picked up a couple of ticks, and only yesterday, I reluctantly bought Frontline Spot-On to use on him.  I hate using any chemicals on him particularly when you read the small print.....

Holding off for a minute as the field we walk has just been cut for silage........I'm just hoping he won't pick up anymore and I don't have to use it at all!

I have used both and found out that advantix worked best for me UNTIL I found out about nematodes(All natural). I have no tick problem because of nematodes so I don't use either brand anymore. Never had a flea problem either.  If anyone wants to know more about it PM me, b/c my email is down right now.

I had been using frontline plus for many years on my two German Shepherds and it worked perfectly.

I was down to one of them when I got my puppy. It worked on the older dog perfectly and I only used it a few months out of the year. She passed recently.

Frontline has never really worked on my pup-now eight months old. I was told I could reapply it after three weeks. Still there is scratching. Now I am stuck. I cannot put any other pesticide on him.

I have this Herbal Skin and Coat Rub by Pet Organics. It contains pennyroyal and comfrey oils in solution. I put a spray top on it to make it easier. I push the fur in the opposite direction from the way it grows, all over. Then I rub it into his skin. He is happy because he thinks it is a massage. Sometimes I rub him with a towel if I get him too damp.

This has had a very positve effect in just two days.

The herbal body rub is made by Nala Barry: www.nalabarry.com/herbal.htm You dan order it from Foster Smith.

I am also going to plant more Erigeron (aka fleabane-a poufy low plant with tiny daisies on it) and spray the shaded areas with nematodes.

I used to get this really good flea spray that was made with Erigeron. I can't find it in the stores. However, I googled and found a brand called Quantum Herbal Products for Pets. They make a natural flea and tick spray called "100% Natural Coat Conditioning Spray". Contents:Essential Oils of Erigeron, Rose Geranium, Eucalyptus and Ravensara, Extracts of St. John's Wort, Wormwood, Black Walnut Hulls, Neem, Rue and Holy Basil in a base of superoxygenated distilled water.

Here's their website: www.quantumherbalproducts.com/Catalog/herbs.cgi/1044

Many, many years ago, all I ever used was the herbal body rub and the erigeron spray. I also used PetGuard Yeast and Garlic powder in their food. I got lazy and went to Advantage and then to Frontline because of tics. Now it isn't working on my pup and so I am going back to my old methods. I will report back in a few weeks.

Found this page by Google search.

I have 2 yellow labs that are hunting dogs. I have had both on Frontline since they were old enough to have it. Both get Heartgard as well. Both have had their Lyme's vaccinations.

My 2.5 year old male just came down with Lyme's disease.

I had them hunting 3 days after applying Frontline, and lost count after the 85th tick I pulled off of them. I continued to pull ticks off of them for several days, were attached, and were ALIVE, although the makers of Frontline claim it will kill ALL ticks within 48 hours, which it did not.

There are a lot of people who have had the same thing happen.

I will be mailing a copy of my receipts for frontline for the past several years, along with a copy of the bill for the Doxy for the Lymes treatment, as well as a picture of the paper plate full of live ticks I pulled off of them that day to the makers of Frontline, with a request that they cover the bill for the Lyme's treatment, and a refund for all the Frontline I've purchased over the years.

IMHO, Frontline is nothing more than consumer fraud, and deserves a class-action lawsuit brought against them.

I firmly agree with the majority here that FRONTLINE is far superior. We live here on South Padre Island in Texas, the southern tip, a few miles from Mexico.  Our resident flea population is by no means  forgiving, any time of the year as of late. We have been greatly affected by the warming trends in a positive way on most fronts. As for the fleas they are going strong year round now. With out the occasional dip in the freezing range or close, they never die all year. We have outside cats that cruise the island and come back with fleas from all over, so treating the yard is only half the problem. The inside dogs suffer from the cats. Only solution was to treat all 8 cats and both dogs with monthly drops.
BAYER reps have convinced a lot of local vets to  carry their med. called Advantage..it's worthless compared to FRONTLINE.
LOOK OUT FOR THE NEW TREND IN VET MEDICINE..THEY ARE NOW BEING WINED AND DINED JUST LIKE DOCTORS FOR PUSHING SCRIPTS...THEY HAVE CONVINCED 90 PERCENT OF OUR WINTER TEXAN POPULATION THAT THEY NEED DRUGS FOR THEIR PETS FOR ONE THING OR ANOTHER. ...THEY ARE HOOKED...EVERY MONTH, JUST LIKE THEY GO TO WALMART FOR THEIR DRUGS, THEY ARE LINED UP AT THE CLINICS HERE, JUST FOR THE MEDS..
SOME ARE BEING EDUCATED BY THEIR VETS BACK HOME TO BE AWARE OF THIS DECEPTIVE PRACTICE..
ONLY A HANDFUL ARE DOING THIS, BUT IN OUR LOCAL AREA ALL ARE ON BOARD BUT THE MOBILE VET..
