Why is this topic in the conformation section of this website?

by Nans gsd on 14 October 2012 - 15:10

Sorry Jen:  the breed is prone to cataracts of all types along with corneal dystrophy along with some other eye conditions, ALL INHERITIBLE.  Nan

Probably because the OP doesn't understand the new format and no one bothered to say anything (until now).

Nan, what is your point? I'm confused. You just told the OP that juvenile cataracts aren't operable. They are operable, with the same high rate of success as any other cataract.

Hellion,
ask your self would you do it if it would be you? I guess you would say yes. Some may say that $6000 is too much to spend on a dog. Well it depends on who you are. What are your means? How much you love your dog. I think you should shop around and call in USA if you are in Canada(?). $6000 seems out of whack to me.
Maybe you can put it on CC or get payment plan from a vet, even so I think getting payment plan from a vet  would be tough one.
Nan, I would not call shame on the breeder this fast. What do you know about them that you are so quick to do so?

US Davis Veterianry school $3300-$4000

Brampton Ontario and I was quoted $1,500 to do just   the surgery. There is aditional cost.

Here i found this . I do not know  much about it but worth to try.

Good point- would you do it if it were you? I agree, though many sadly think "it's just a dog..."

I posted the same link.

As I said, I also have experience with this with TWO different dogs and both were fine after surgery. The second went blind around 12 and did very well until she died.

Definitely get a second opinion, preferably from an eye specialist.  Years ago I was told that my female had dual cataracts and needed surgery and when I took her to a specialist she laughed.  She said that the dog did NOT have cataracts and that the breed is prone to producing small crystals behind the lens which give the appearance of cloudiness but would not affect her vision at all.  She had no loss of sight the rest of her life.

You said that it was only $400.00 for the second eye so the first eye costs $5600??? I wonder why the first eye is so much? The dog wouldn't be under anesthetic for that long. You can always ask for a breakdown of a quote.  If your vet is referring you to a specialist then your vet might be taking a cut.  Going direct to a specialist might save you some $$ if you are able to do that. Such a shame when people who love animals have to be put in such a predicament.
I hope this is a case of a wrong diagnosis.

Thank all of you guys for helping me. Its all worth my time to read every post. I'm doing my best to figure out what I can do to make such a huge amount of money. they told me the surgery was about 4,500 but initually all of the total cost would roughly be around 6 thousand. Hopfully things start to curve my way financiually. I can do care credit but the problem is that My limit Is 1,000 dollars.  As for the crystals behind the eyes... Hm.... I will def get a second opinion. As for the Breeder. I got my husky from a good breeder. I have akc papers and everything. Hes a pure bred SIberian Husky and all. I think the problem is  is that hes just a rare case. I mean maybe through out the breeding cataracts and other disorders developed?
I will read your guy's links and look into them.
I have a couple things I have looked into. Just waiting for tomarrow to come by and look into them. Like I have a lead on a program called Animal Charity human society near where I live. and I need to call my vet and tell her that its to expensive and maybe she can help in some sort of way.
