True the above, but as you said so well in your post, the owner probably bought the dog as a pet, because he liked how the dog looked, not a a working prospect. The dog was most probably bred from generations of pet quality dogs, so seeing it do even that much is not bad. No, it isn't nationals material, but the dog works nicely nevertheless, and the owner and dog are having fun.

That was the original purpose I posted that video....The potential is there regardless of the color.....I also do believe that the white dog in the movie has some potential....My point is back to the Original thread, "Working White Shepherd" and not about props used in the movie, which than took the thread into another direction.....Sorry that had to happen...by bazza on 30 January 2011 - 18:01

I am waiting to see those white GSD working dog videos.....There maybe some out there, But I don't think anyone who owns them would post them for fear of being criticized because their dog is white....Thats really sad....

The white shepherds are bred for color/looks not work ability. Just like most AKC show dogs they loose the ability when that happens. A very very limited few are worked. While the color does not mean something can or cant do the job, breeding just for the color and no work ability does mean they just cant do it.
They are first and formost supposed to be a working breed and when people breed just for pets then they are unable to do the original work. I hate pet breeders ruining the breed.

Regardless of whether or not a white Shepherd has what it takes, most breeders of white German Shepherds do NOT breed for work. And you will not find many whites who can compete at high level competitions. While color may not have anything to do with anything......certain colors just happen to be what certain people are not breeding to work.... So if you are looking for a dog for competing then I don't think white should be your first choice. I've seen plenty of ads for white Shepherds advertising them as something awesome. They promote the color like it's something you have to have if you want a nice GSD. Just like the uneducated breeders and public see solid blacks sold as the oh so "rare Black German "Shepard" And they'll sell them for a fortune, and people brag about the rare black Shepherd they got as if it was something amazing.

We had a white dog in for training many years ago he was a very aggressive dog and very nice actually , we fininshed his on and off leash and bitework , He belonged to a cop in NC the dog had a lot of street bites in his life and save the wifes life from an armed intruder. But he is only one I have ever sseen worth feeding

I had one i rescued wrestle man. awesome hunt drive and strong protection. Though he could be a little spastic/unfocused at times.
however he died at an early age from liver failure. just shy of 3 years of age.
A dog is a dog. Ive seen mutts from rescue that work better than some of these proclaimed top dog litters turn out. color has nothing to do with ability. However having went through it and doing research. If you look into when the breeding for the white gsd took off it is another subject of fad breeding. Many have temperament issues, mental instability, loss of working abilities, and many more health issues on a higher scale/percentage than well bred working shepherds.
so just make sure you know what you are getting into and do your research before making a decision of procuring a white shepherd.

There are whites still being produced in Europe, including Germany, that can and do work.
Most of the whites produced here are bred for show, or, as someone pointed out they are byb.
I have also owned one that I rescued. He was definitely the alpha of my dogs and would protect his pack (my other dogs) from anything including coyotes that tried to go after one of my dogs when he was a pup. Somewhere I have some pictures of that encounter showing how well blood shows up on a white coated dog. Thankfully, none of the blood was his.
Someone may want to contact Sandro Sechi. He is Roland Seibel's son-in-law.
Sandro titled his white GSD to Sch3 something like 20 times.
