I'm operating on the assumption that you've already tried the "have strangers treat the dog with hotdogs/liver/etc" routine to no avail?

Ruger
Her dog wearing a gentle Leader, You take NO notice of what that lady tells you for she desperately needs help with her own Dog and not from the source who told her to put a gentle leader on her Dog
If you are happy with the help you are getting then stick with it, Training is a long term thing nothing will be accomplished in a couple of days, Dogs are fickle living creatures and one day they do good the next day go back a little.
Slowly but surely is the way to go training a Dog one thing at a time let each thing sink in before moving on, The first thing is COME the dog must come to you as soon as it is told to its life may depend on it some time, Plus the Fact is this NO Dog will look on the Handler as its Leader if it refuses to come to him or her the moment it is said not twice only ONCE
Next is SIT  then DOWN after that you go on,  get those three right first most certainly the first one

Too late...grrrrrr.  No wonder the dog is stressed; he doesn't know when he's going to get his neck wrenched again.

Don't discount using markers (the clicker 'marks' a specific behavior), though; I used to but have had some good success on some things using one with Axel.

There are many ways to train a dog...and all of them may help you reach your goal...The most important thing is that you stick with one method and learn it....Give it a chance before you give up on it and go try something else...
One of the worst things a new handler/trainer can do is to listen to and try everything everyone tells you...Remember....Everyone trains differently and will give you different advice...So sure you can listen to everyone...but don't give up on the method your using and go try every new one that you hear about...
New fads are great to hear about and maybe store in your memory banks for later on...But until you've trained a number of dogs and know what to do in different situations with different types of dogs...Then don't give up the ship for something new or a new fad...

LMAO... who wouldn't want to be sprayed with tranquilizers with that owner...did you try to use the "off" clicker or the water bottle for her after that speech?

Ruger;  you need to find another training class.  Go without your dog and check it out;  watch the type of training and see if you like what they are doing.  If you do NOT then move on.  Then if you like what is going on take your dog next time.  I think it sounds like he is reacting to you.  Best of luck I know you go through hell getting these males trained and it DOES TAKE TIME.  Nanci
