Actually, let's just say he just woke up;-)....

Jenni:

Is the bulldog you have in the picture  pit? With the exception of his lack of modesty LOL; he is a good looking dog.

The Pits we are having trouble with around here are the shorter legged variety with a head life a snapping turtle.  The on you have pictured resembles the type I grew up with (or appears s from the picture).

I may have to narrow my statements and quit making such blanket statements.  Just a thought.

I must continue to argue that it appears there is disproportionate number of killings and mauling from the "bulldog family".  And I do agree with the fact that any breed large or small can hurt a child.  A friend had a Pom that really did a job on the face of an 18 month old. Really sad!

I've got a 4 yr old grandson who is afraid of dogs (with the exception of my GSD service dog) because when he was two his aunt had a large Rot that did not bite him but roughed him up just playing with him.

Simon is an American Pit Bull Terrier. He weighs between 55-60lbs and he has straight legs that allow him to not only walk a straight line, but to jump as well. He's not immodest; he simply has nothing to hide;-)

Your statement about the shorter legged variety drives my (previous) points (made in other posts) home; what lowlifes are calling Pit Bulls are NOT what they truly are/were meant to be. I would love to see a pedigree w/a DNA test proving it attached to every story re: a Pit Bull mauling a child. Like I originally said, watering down breeds for the money has really ruined the temperament of a lot of once-great working breeds.

KC, why do you prefer a Pit to an AB? How do you think the genetics and temperaments differ? That's interesting. There are so many different bloodlines in both breeds, and some that seem to blur, it's confusing to me.

I don't EVER blame breeds. I blame owners and I blame the current fad of "there are no bad dogs" and "all dogs can be rehabilitated"...  What one family calls a "trusted family pet" I have often (very often) found to be an eye rolling, fear biting wreck that is "protective of the children" and completely nervy.

I can kick in my personal thought on ABs: I call them "white rotts".  While they did psring from the APBT in the late 70's (despite all the crap spewed by their breeders) they are MUCH more "mastiff" than bulldog in appearance, temperament and drive.  Sadly, they are often crossed with other "big pit bulls" to produce even more "hybrid" animals of uncertain temperament.  I have found handler dominance in the AB, something I have yet to see in a purebred APBT.

NO ONE who loves dogs should point fingers at breeds. MANY breeds have and will take their turn on the hotseat, just as GSD did in the 60's when my sister was serverly mauled by the neighbors GSD.

What prompted these two animals to attack? We'll never know. BUT I CAN SAY ONE FACT:  They did NOT have good temperament, and for that I hold the parent's responsible.

The mastiff issue in supposed APBTs has been covered many times in other threads on here. I have commented countless times that crossing mastiffs in with the other crap that these gangbangers use to create these hideous beasts that look like they're on steroids is really screwing up the temperament because you're not breeding "type to type." You take a breed that's more of a guardian breed and can have a high amount of dominance and/or handler aggression and throw it in with extreme tenacity and then combine that w/something w/high prey drive, and now you've created a dog that no longer bears any temperamental resemblance to the true and proper APBT. Some people like these ugly monsters- ok, that's fine. To each his own. But for THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T CALL THEM PIT BULLS. Call them something else, something more fitting. "Penis Extenders" or something like that.

I think type to type breeding is extremely important in all breeds; if you're not striving for a consistent temperament in your breeding goals, you're opening the door to genetic "wildcards" even more than usual. Breeding is certainly not an exact science, but IMO, breeding totally different temperaments to each other is risky at best and not conducive to anything positive. Again and again, I'll say when you lose purpose in breeding, the dogs go downhill, temperament first.

What is the deal with "Blue Pits" and "Red Nose Pits" they are advertised at extreme prices.  Yet all that I have seen appear to stand less than 18" and have huge heads with massive jaws.  Some ads state weights up to 100#s.

They appear to have no working purpose.  Yet I would say they would be hell in a fighting pit.

Again, these are not the pits of the past.

Are these the ones with the aggression issues? When seen in public these are usually with Gang Banger types or or those with "droopy pants" and most of these dogs are in harnesses, scratching the ground as they DRAG their owners along.

Just wondering.

I was wondering that too Tuff, what is a red or blue nosed Pit?
Is this a breed?  I always thought Pits were a mixture of breeds?
The kid that I work with, (yes he's covered with tatoo's and has droopy drawers ) has two, that he got from the States and paid over $1800 for them.  I just saw the male, he has a huge head, huge shoulders and a tiny butt.
BTW very human friendly, and he admittedly wishes they weren't so friendly.
