I wouldnt tape them, if they stood up when she was younger they will stand up on their own. You could also try feeding her cottage cheese/yogurt or some other goody that is really high in calcium. Has she finished teething yet? If she hasnt then all the calcium her body has is being used to replace the teeth she's missing. I have a coated shepherd and his came up fine on their own but I would deffinately give her bones or cottage cheese everyday for a few weeks and see if it helps at all.

This might be helpful. http://leerburg.com/tapingears.htm. Looks to me like you will have to help them if you want them to stand, but she is one of the few GSD's that I think look good even with her ears down. Normally it would bother me.

Good luck

Oki I just was able to look at your dog's pick it looks like she is 5 months right? No biggy. Are the ears never up or just occasionaly? If they are up but not consistant than just give some beef marrow bone every day to chew on, you might want to use corral callcium (not recomended but it works, I tried it) and the will be up within 2 weeks :) if that won't work tape it, still keep on giveing some raw bones to chew on and that should take care of it. Good luck.

She is 6 months old .  I would wait until she is 8 months old,.I think that is a better time to worry.

I totally agree with a lot here!  Leave them aloneeee.  They will stand.  Like they said, unless there is a history of the breeder having problem with ears, don't touch them!  I don't understand why people think they have to mess with them all the time.  I have a friend that insisted on taping her dogs ears.  She obsessed over it!  Drove me nuts.  Chaos's ears were very heavy as he is a long coat.  I didn't touch them.  They stood at 5 and a half months old.  The vet said because they were so heavy, if they weren't up by 8 or 9 months old, then worry!  So chill, set back and watch them stand is my advice!

Speaking from someone who went through the ordeal of taping ears for 3 friggin months on a dog who, genetically speaking, had NEVER had a problem with ears standing... officially not worth it! I had a puppy out of a very top male GSD bred to nice female, neither of whom had ever had a problem with soft ears. Bottom line... regardless of what "taping tricks" I used, the ears would not stand on their own and at 8 months of age the breeder finally conceded that the ears would not likely magically perk up on their own. I returned the young dog for a refund and this dog has (not so) amazingly disappeared off the face of this earth. How appropriate! I will personally never tape ears again. Either they will stand on their own, or not. Written guarantee on ears standing naturally in hand, Yvette

I got two sisters that come from American showlines- which generally have bigger ears than the German lines.  Unfortunately, the breeder had taped them both with duct tape!  No I'm not kidding.  We drove 3 hours to get home and I spent another 3 hours massaging their ears with baby oil to loosen the tape.  It took the tape off and we all smelled wonderful!  :)

Seriously- do not ever put anything on their fur that you wouldn't put on your hairy arm and take off.  We used the paper surgical tape between 7 and 8 months and the girls' ears are big and beautiful.  Keep giving bones, be patient and listen to the advice of the great people on this board- it will help a lot!  Good luck!

Thanks again everyone!!!! I gave her a raw chicken leg today.... per one of her breeder's request. She devoured it quickly. Her right ear stood up for half of my walk today.... though I think maybe it was because it was leaning against Rama's left ear!!! HAHA!

I will keep you posted! Happy Holidays!!!! Jacob

Glue? Tape? Splints? This is one bizzarre topic! Sometimes doo doo happens, and ears dont come up, why interfere with nature? Why is it so crucial in this case to have the ears up? If you arent going to show or breed, why the panic? If it aint broke, dont fix it!!!!!!

I also say, LEAVE THE EARS ALONE. I have Several long coats, and have had Numerous long coat pups. NEVER a problem about the hair on their ears keeping them down. Yorkies, yes, Shepherds no.
