Outlaw

Good Job, leaving him off leash can be very helpful and seems to be working. I would continue over time finding more difficult steps for him but let him be totally comfortable on these stairs before progressing.

Aandj...I agree with you and do the same, imprinting your pups is very important.  Doing this type training with pups will not cause HD nor any other damange, I have been imprinting over 20 years and have never hurt a pup or dog yet.  But I guess if you had a young one with hd you could have a problem and/or speed up the onset. Thats why everyone needs to work on improving hips on every litter no exceptions. The more you expose a young pup too the better off you will be as he ages.

On using a ball or treats is really determined by the drives of the dog but the main thing is be very careful and even at 7 months do not allow the dog to get hurt learning something especially if he is already lacking confidence to do so. That is why I suggested treats in this situation. I have some dogs that yes I have trained on agility with a ball/etc but they were very strong and full of confidence. But in your case you are doing good and I would continue with what works which is don't pressure him or try to force him on leash. Let him figure it out.\

good luck

Outlaw,
southtexan got to the heart of the matter. Read their post at 04:09 it sums it up well. This should be fun for you and the pups and should be a good time for you to learn to be creative. This to me is one of the great times in their life and mine, like being a daddy again.

GREAT JOB   Doing the short steps was good....6 or 7steps and then add a few more  go places with steps and do the same thing at home.....soon he will do it and feel good about it and not be scarred.....

keep doing all the tricks everyone suggested.....Im so sorry the breeder didnt already take pup over boards, grates, shell, and steps....of course not all breeders nor I have an upstairs long spiral of steps....but if they go up 6 or so , they already know steps and 15 more should be a piece of cake....

lesson here,,,,if you are a breeder  imprint your pups...
