I asked if you liked a roach back.

by Mystere on 20 March 2009 - 00:03
High,
All this rhapsodizing on your dog's beauty of movement is making me wonder about you.
If you took your heinie out and actually did a bit of schutzhund training, you would know just how just how much physical work is involved for the handler. Hell, if you would get off your dusty and just go to a schutzhund club and watch, you would be able to discuss it more a more informed and intelligent manner. Sheesh!
I am done responding to anything from you from this point on. It's like a dog trying to catch a wave.

I did, not very strenuous work I have to say. Not like biking at high speed for just 20 minutes. This is for the human being.
Fast trotting for a GSD, just before galloping, for just 20 minutes is more work out for the dog.

How much human energy is used to train each dog in protection, obedience, and tracking in SchH?

by Red Sable on 20 March 2009 - 19:03

Hmm, for SchH III Obedience:
With dumbbells of various weights, the dog is required to retrieve on a flat surface, over a one-meter hurdle, and over a six-foot slanted wall.
How would your dog do at clearing a six foot slanted wall?
In addition to the Schutzhund temperament tests, the United Schutzhund Clubs of America offer three training degrees: the FH 1 and FH 2, advanced tracking degrees; WH, or basic protection degree which includes basic obedience, and the AD which is an 12.5 mile endurance test and includes obedience
How would your dog do in a 12.5 mile endurance test?! not to mention running from blind to blind in search of the helper. I think he'd much prefer trotting in a circle, because I'll bet he couldn't do much else.

For the human being! You missed the thrust.
"High, surely you are not saying trotting around a ring, is more of a workout for a dog, than schutzhund?! "
No, but I would say that fast troting for 4 miles just shy of galloping, in about 20 minutes, is likely more work than protection, obedience and tracking even for the dogs.
Don't mistake a test drive on the street with true performance. The show ring is adjusted for the human beings!
I have also trotted her for about 8 miles many times without break, though I had not recorded the time. I always bike next to her. She showed no sign of fatique. I think that my Am Showline girl will pass the endurance test with ease. There is a even a rest break in between for the endurance test. She has a deep chest, excellent aerobic capacity, very thick pads on her paws and well-arched toes, very true coming and going.
Her pup is developing remarkably thick pads on her paws, at 14 weeks.

I can tell you that Schutzhund is a sport..for the dog and the owners..the time invested in training to tiltle is not countable..it requires as much discipline and comitment as any sport if you want to perform..Doing 6 blinds in full speed and bark for a couple of minutes after requires great stamina and endurance..Tracking needs focus and concentration..Obedience needs disciplne, precision and rapidity..Those dogs are great atletes. And the people who train these dogs are out there..doing the work with the dogs. This field is huge..you have to walk it a couple of times when you train..you have to run after you dogs (sometimes)..hold you dogs (and for women it's sometime pretty hard!).
Anyway..the other thing that assures me it is a sport is that everyone is having a beer after LOL

Biking at 15 mph for 20 minutes is not nothing for a person. It is rather intense.
The best for the human being is to choose a loop that contains a slight grade. The 2.5 miles downgrade is easier, the 2.5 miles upgrade at 15 mph can be a very intense burst of workout.
I do this every 48 hours, and then walk the same or similar loop with her in between days.
