And aside from the conformation ring, a long stock coat GSD competes in the same working activities with the stock coat--there's no separate sections of IPO, tracking or herding trials based on coat, or even breed. The SV does require separate conformation classes for the long stock coat dogs, and the LSH [langstockhaar, the German term for them] have a separate SV stud book now.

But it doesn't matter in your case, because your dog is definitely a stock coated dog.

Does Hexe or anyone else know: who would be the final arbiter about which dogs had which coat, in America?

In Germany it would be the Kormeister, but in the States who would / could give an 'official' decision ?

Here in the UK I would expect any dispute to be settled by whichever of our panel of Surveyors conducts a Survey on the dog (our version of the Korung), I don't know whether anybody else would have a more definite 'say' on whether a dog was a LSH or not while it was still young. (One would think a Show Secretary could decide at 6 months, if the pup is entered for its first show in the wrong class ?).

I don't actually KNOW of any times there has been an argument, so far !

Thank you all for your awesome feedback, I am learning a lot! Is there an updated GSD standard book that can be purchased? Milla and I live in Canada - I don't know how much different Candian vs American rules are, but I'm assuming they are quite similar.

You don't need to buy a book, (not that i'd discourage anyone from reading books about the breed !) -

'SV' shows are always judged using the FCI/German/internationally agreed Standard, I think.  Most nations' KC revisions aren't all that wonderful .

But I expect the Canadian Kennel Club version, (if, like the AKC it has its own GSD Standard) is also available in a pdf form - Sunsilver, anyone else north of the border, am I right ?  Maybe a Canadian poster or 2 could enlighten us about differences in Show Regulations as well (the Rules of the Showring, which say e.g. what Classes can be held; how handlers, Judges and Stewards should behave; etc.) are a different animal from the Breed Standards which give guidance on what the dog should be, & look like.

On which breed's header page you'll then find (R/H col) the PDF symbol to download the December 2010 confirmed version of the Standard.  Plus some other info on the breed [eg alternative language versions of the GSD name].

If you enter your dog in an SV show the Judge will for sure let you know you can all so enter and then check with someone involved with the show will tell you if you ask. If you entered in the wrong class you can move to the other class if you do this on check in day before you check in.

My vote is stockcoat don't worry.

WR, out of curiosity, does that 'checking with the Judge on the day' stuff mean it gets permanently put into an indvidual's Breed Book, or something, or could there be another day and another show, where a different Judge thought differently ? There does seem to be a 'grey area' with a few dogs, especially while still puppies, when they aren't super-obviously long, or stock, coated. [Not saying this applies to OP's dog !]

When you check in the Judge is not checking your dog that is when you show paper work to the show Secretary and helper.

The dog of course would already be registered with the SV but if when you registered your dog and were not sure later then go to a show. 

If you have entered ask a show officer before you check in. 

If you are not entered in the show ask the judge when he is not in the ring. If the judge says long coat and you registered short then change your papers. 

If your dog is long and you called it short and go in the ring you will be moved out. 

I can't imagine how rare it would be you find a young dog change enough to have confused a Judge no mater the age.   I had one point out which of my 3 day old puppies were and to me they all looked the same. lol

 

What province are you in? I'm guessing Alberta or Sask from your prairie pic.

I also agree with all others about your dog being a stock coat, and will therefore be in a class with larger numbers at a seiger show.

How is your training going? Do you have a goal of titling and then putting your dog in the working-class at a seiger show? Good luck whatever you plan to do.
