Many thanks, I'll try that with one of the holistic vets. And if it doesn't work out, maybe the titer will in a year...or maybe there will be some progress on the whole rabies schedule by then. My dog was over a year old when I got her; the previous owner had lost her rabies certificate, no info - so I'm stuck giving her more than I think she should have.

Oh, think I misunderstood you on the titer. I did ask them about that & they don't allow it....I guess it's not a reliable indicator. But they seem to think the 1-yr vaccine reliably times out in 365 days, even if there's a lot of disagreement. Go figure. You'd think there would be some flexibility.

 AC should have a record if they got tags for her, the Vet who gave the shot and her certificate if you know who the Vet was could give a copy.

Can anybody explain to non-Americans what's this starting all over means? You give Rabies every year for three years, then every three years? Or now, then booster after a year and then every three years? And, what's the consequences if you don't comply?

This actually the first time I have heard of restarting. All the vets I have been to it is the first time you vaccinate Rabies with the 1-year, then the next year you can get the 3-year shot, and every 3 years if that is what you want. I have been late on vaccinating before and have never needed to restart.

Vox, it is not possible that animal control doesn't have the info. SOMEONE has the info on the dog. Unless she was never vaccinated.

Titers are perfectly reliable if they show immunity. If they don't, they're not that reliable because that doesn't mean the dog's memory cells would not recognize the virus and act accordingly. Point being, if positive, you are really in the clear. If negative, you might still be in the clear in the case of a real infection, but you're screwed with the county.

Jenni: thanks, I'll see if I can find out anything from the county where I got her. I was thinking she might have been given the vaccine by the owner? Not sure if that would even be recognized? My county did tell me No Titers, no exceptions, for rabies. I actually had a training center refuse to take titers for other shots. I'm really frustrated but will post more if I find out anything new. Heard back from one holistic vet today - I had asked about the mercury-free version & they don't carry any rabies vaccines.
Swarnendu & MuchtoLearn: Starting over is when you have no proof of the initial rabies vaccine. My state doesn't allow you to then get the 3-year and you're done. I'm fairly sure my dog did have an initial vaccine but since I had no proof, when I went to register her with the county I had to start as if she'd never had a rabies shot, with the 1-year...now, a year later, she's required to have the 3-year. But if I'm late, from what I've heard, it means I could have to restart with the 1-yr. As far as the penalty: there's a higher fee for registering her if late. And I'm not sure beyond that. Rabies is required.

If the dog was vaccinated, but not licensed then Animal Control would not have the information. Where I live a lot of dogs are not licensed.

That's what I was thinking. I'm sure she's had all shots since she was around other dogs, but without the proof I'm stuck. From what I've heard most people don't license their dogs.
