I've used the SV site to check the ZW numbers before, but I have yet to find a way to check online whether the dog's "a" rating is correct--is that available?

I would imagine you could safely rely on the information provided at WinSiS-CAT.com

Yep I just checked.

My male went from 80 to 85.

My female went from 83 to 87

Why the change?

A few points here or there is normal but 15 is a huge leap and not normal.

It all depends. If your dog has few progeny, one or two ratings can change the number quite a bit. The more progeny, the less movement you will see in the rating. I am not sure whether changes in a sibling's ZW due to the sibling's progeny will effect your dog's ZW, though.

For example, say your dog has a "a" normal hips out of two dogs with good ZWs and a1 hips--your dog has a rating of 70. If you dog has a2 hips, that number will go up to 85, I think. If your dog gets a3 hips, that number goes up to 100. Say your dog has a1 hips but 3 siblings have a2 and one sibling has a3--your dogs rating will likely rise into the 80s. But what if the a3 dog produces 10 children who are all a1--will your dog's rating be affected?

You can't automatically discount an OFA claim just because it's not coming up on the web, though--I believe owners are still given the choice as to whether the results are published on the website or not. If you can't find the dog in the OFA database, ask the breeder for the animal's OFA number, and phone the OFA to confirm it's the same dog.

OFA's website SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS for searching. If you are not way above average at understanding how search functions work and the kinds of things that often trip them up, you will often leave that site frustrated or thinking everyone is a liar. As someone else said (Kelly?), ONLY the name part is reliable!!! I had some loser try to bash me for lying about a rating because they weren't spelling the kennel name right and the reg. number didn't come up. Under a first name search, it popped up and they saw the excellent and had to aplogize. So, by all means, do your homework but do NOT rely solely on one website, whether it's the breeder's or OFAs. There are a lot of reasons why things will be missing or inaccurate.

As far as  zw goes, the problem with them is too few people understand them. If a dog only has 2 progeny whose hips have been rated in the SV system, then their zw can change far more drastically than a dog with 300 progeny. As to the comment about a really low zw w/a pair of NZ hips, I say who cares as long as the dog has many progeny that he/she's being rated on and not just a handful. I couldn't care less what a dog IS- I only care what a dog PRODUCES.  Again, this is a case where you need to get your facts checked and verified by more than one source.

Hexe, the last time I submitted to OFA, that option was available for negative results only.

Anyway, this wasn't meant to come across as everyone whose dogs does appear, or appear identical, is absolutely lying. But as we all know, plenty of dishonest folks out there certainly do. It's one more way a buyer can research and safeguard themselves. A good breeder will of course be open and honest about any discrepancies.

Jen- I have no problem with OFA's website, I find it easy, its the SV's website I had trouble with initially.

I don't bother w/OFA's site much anymore; maybe they changed it. I hope so! It used to be that I could only get the dog to come up if I used either the first name or the kennel name. Reg. number didn't always work, for some reason. I have never had a problem w/the SV, actually.
