Tenmon, interesting comments that go to show the old timers knew a thing or two when it comes to creating, maintaining and improving a blood line rather than immediately trying to create an individual great dog. We can always learn from our elders.

I wonder if this character of the bitch they talk about is the "Sound nerves, alertness, self-confidence, trainability" of the standard that helps to keep the male "courage, fighting drive and hardness" in check and allows for the versatile dog, rather than the one dimensional dog, you refer to on the Civil Dogs thread. And of course the bitch been the primary guide, tutor and master during those important early weeks of a pups development makes it doubly important.

Yes, ok, I know it's a bit of a uneducated & sweeping statement that the female & male sides only ever bring specific qualities and no doubt there is a big blurred line going on here. But hopefully, this hasn't prevented the main thrust to be gathered (at work & a only quick 5 minutes to respond), that a good female will bring a more thoughtful, tempered, & dare I say it intelligent component to the equation.

Cheers,

Oh well...the old question...why is the male worth more than the female?
Genetically, they are equally important. A breeder is only as good as the combination of his breeding pairs. If we hear more about the Sire, it's probably because the majority of breeders are still male themselves.  Unfortunately female dogs are often not shown to reach their full potential, as they could, because they are getting bred as soon as they reach their first SchH title. And show-wise, less people like to watch an older female with her mammaries hanging than a still muscular old stud.
I personally prefer to look at the motherlines first and prefer the working west German lines going back to Seffe and Valet from Busecker Schloss, Diana vom Patersweg and recently Kira von Karthargo.
