How is there a pup blocking the birth canal if he says he just pulled one out and had jumped the gun b/c it was still in the placenta, not detached???

I would only give oxytocin at the end, when I thought she was done but to make sure there is nothing left in there.

Calcium can help; vanilla ice cream is also a nice treat and more fun than Tums.

Please take internet advice with a grain of salt!!!!

I have no problem with the duration of time unless the bitch is working hard for hour(s) and nothing happens. It does not sound like a shot is needed, because eventhough the time between pups is long, she still is giving the puppies naturally! Perhaps a tums pill every couple hour or so.

"I would only give oxytocin at the end"

How would Ober know when the end is if he/she has no idea how many pups are expected?

Quite simple, if you know what you're looking at/feeling. He said he's experienced. I assume an experienced person knows what a bitch looks like when all the pups are out, and knows what it feels like...though I would also expect someone experienced would know that several hours  between puppies when not in labor is no big deal...so nevermind, I guess.

"so nevermind, I guess"

He is experienced but comes to a forum for critical advise?  sigh.....   Oxymoron not oxytocin........

Oxytocin is not the greatest of ideas!  If given with pups still inside it can cause the heart rate of the pups to drop and lack of oxygen intake. If she is done then what is the point? Just another injection not needed. Calcium is the best route, tums or icecream, this increases the intensity and duration of contractions without the harmful effects of oxytocin.

Not to be mean but if the bitch has problems whelping a litter naturally then why breed her? If you have to give oxytocin to a bitch to help whelp a litter then again, why breed her?

Just my honest opinion, if theses are issues then nature is telling you something..

Oxytocin scares me, and can also cause the placenta to detach . Calcium is the best bet, ice cream, with crushed tums, and sometimes bone meal. But neither replaces veterinary care if to much time has passed and she is showing ANY sign of distress. Please keep us posted. Best of luck to you, and your girl. Hopefully she is just taking a break, they do sometimes.

Vincent, what, pray tell, are you talking about? What indication do we have that this bitch is incapable of  "whelping a litter naturally"??? As to the oxytocin, many people give it at the end to be sure there isn't one last pup, or dead pup inside if they have reason to believe there might be. Additionally, for huge litters, it helps stimulate milk production.

I don't use it  but wouldn't criticize someone or their bitch if they choose to use it toward the end. Hardly the same as a c-section or other ungodly things people do to have puppies.

If you are not familiar with the use of Oxytocin, you're probably doing your breeding program a disservice. Consider this,,, not everything in nature is designed to survive. Ever had a puppy that was born dead? It looked healthy; was probably alive two minutes ago and it came out just a little too late? Sure we all have. It's a part of breeding.

Now, if you watched the female and monitored her contractions and saw this pup was a little slow coming out, after the third set of contractions, 10 minutes of labor, you can feel the pup right there,,,,maybe a big one, maybe mom is a little tired, etc.

Rather than just let the little pup die for the sake of not wanting to interfere, if mom can't have it naturally-she must not be a good dog, etc. ,,,,,give mom a shot of oxytocin and that pups out of there.

Just think about it. I personally don't like dead healthy puppies. I'd rather stay on top of the litter to ensure they receive life saving help when needed.
