Well, honestly nona, most of them don't. Not necessarily because color makes them bad dogs, but because most quality lines have bred white out. A lot of white dogs you'll meet today are multi-gen byb stuff and have no better anatomy or working ability than most indiscriminately bred GSDs of any color. And sometimes, in any color, you get a fluke and come across a dog with some ability.

I agree, GSDnewbie, those clips were downright silly!

Rubber bands????? OOOKAY!!!!! Whatever!!!  Remember the movie was made in 1982...The movie tricks and props have advanced just a tid....

I didn't post them to debate them or defend them.....Someone wanted to see a white gsd work, thats why I posted it... In The first video, not the movie one, I wonder if they used rubber bands on that dog also.....

.Why not just enjoy the movie video for the entertainment.....???

Now that I have watched it again, I can see where you could say it kinda looks fake....But to folks that are just watching that movie for the entertainment value, and not to pick it apart or dissect it, scene by scene, it does look convincing.......

The dog in the first video I liked! Shows some promise and ability there. The harness the dog is wearing really isn't suited for protection work, and the title really has nothing to do with the clip - looks like someone had an agenda using that as a title.

The movie clips are just ridiculous - the dog is playing, no intensity at all - the decoy is doing all the work to keep the dog engaged in prey drive. But of course, 99% of Joe Public has no idea what they are seeing. I haven't seen the movie (don't want to either), but it has been discussed on another board a little while ago. My understanding is that the dog trainer just used the first white GSD he could get his hands on, didn't make any effort to find a dog that did have any real defense of seriousness in his work for a more realistic effect.

I'd never heard of the movie White Dog, but turns out it was actually suppressed by Paramount pictures as a racist film, even though the whole point of the film is anti-racism. And yes, that is Paul Winfield as the trainer.

Here's info about the book on which the movie was based:

The first video didn't show much anything that would make me go get a White GSD for the next schutzhund natinonals, lol. I would expect that level of intesity even from a show line dog

I have met quite a few people on the street with white gsd. Everyone I met seemed to take pride in the fact they thought they had some rare specimen of a gsd. None of those owners had any desire to participate in any working venue. So the problem is many white GSDs are being bred just for the color and sold to people who only care about color. Working ability is being bred further and further away

Now I do believe that all GSDs no matter what the color or pedigree background will be farely easy to obediance train and very loyal.

Yes the dog is playing, and having fun while playing.....He is probably someone's couch potato. Remember, he was the first white dog found to play the part.....I bet that 100% of the Joe's really enjoyed the movie and didn't dissect or pick apart each and every scene.....They just saw a "dog", (not a specific breed) that was in their eyes, carefully trained to do a job......

Because this movie was back in the early 80's, 82 to be exact, the movie was made because of the seriousness of the message..Don't pick apart the scenes and its actors, and the movie could be a way to educate and try to bring the world together as one....

Not trying to make this an issue of other sorts, but trying to point out its not the color of the dog that always matters...Hey, the dog used had to be a GSD....A breed that is easily controlled and trained, regardless of its color, and still have fun while doing it....YAY, FOR THE GSD BREED!!!  JMO

The thread is titled " Working White Shepherd, not about movie stars, movie goers, or bringing the world together as one. Jees!!!!!
