I had a year old female that was going to an adoption home and I opted to have her spayed as part of the adoption agreement. My vet quoted me a price of $200-230 for the spay, the same price as I had my female spayed the year before. I looked around for other low cost options and found that my local humane society did neuter/spays for $30-90 depending if you were a state resident / county resident. I got her spayed for $30 plus a chip for $15. Very good deal and they did good work. They used stiches instead of the glue, but that just meant that the adoptive family would have to go see their vet to have them removed, which they were going to do anyways. Look around at the local Vet schools, other vet practices or Humane societies... you can find some good deals.

I just had my girl spayed in Humane Society, with shots and chip and procedure I paid $74.00 and they did a great job...look at her, its clean, its a small incisions she had no issues at all...

However, my brothers dog was taken to a "best" vet in town and he paid $220.00, 2 days after procedure he had to bring her back in and she had to stay 2 days to be monitored so simple procedure turned into a 800 dollar fiasco...
Humane societies like it was said before can do this with their eyes closed....

Um guys....you know I'm taking a male to be neutered right? I'm not getting any dog spayed. Isn't neutering easier and cheaper too typically?

LOOOOL....yes...and it will cost you half the price to neuter than to spay....just making a point that Humane Societies are GOOD and CHEAP. :)

There's no reason that a neuter should cost anywhere near as much as a spay, GSDguy...

I haven't done a neuter in a while, but my vet charged us $71 for a spay, so a neuter for a similarly sized dog would be probably about half to two thirds of that.  Our vet doesn't give pain meds to take at home unless you specifically request them, because he feels that if a dog feels no pain, they are more likely to injure themselves playing too hard.

My GSD Prince, when I had him neutered, was given a prescription of Rimadyl for pain...He was five then.  I didn't give him any of the pain meds..Seemed like a bit too strong for that.  He stayed quiet for a few days, then his activity level came up again.  He did fine, and as I recall, it cost me about $54...Keep in mind that was a long time ago, so don't know what the same vet would charge nowadays.

Wow, great prices.  My neighbour paid 400+ for a spay.  The vets here are very well off.

 - He's getting his pup neutered this week, I'll  have to ask him how much they gouged him for that.

I guess I'll look into low cost places and the humane society then.
