Actually Sam, The medio and Grande are interbred in portugal since you can get medio's from Grande litters and vice versa.
We had to provide documentation to AKC regarding the interbreeding of the "Bigs".

The pequeno (small) is NOT interbred with the bigs. In fact, there is a 4 inch gap intentionally placed into the breed standard to keep them apart from the bigs.

Not only do they come in 3 sizes, they come in 2 coat types.
Wire which is actually more like a rough coat and Smooth (short hair) which is very soft.

I am glad Diane came across them in her book. Now you can see some video and learn more about them !!!

There are only about 10 people breeding them in the US.

Best of luck with your effort. You sound like a dedicated breeder.  : )

I appreciate your kind compliment Diane.

As i said before, this breed is not a money maker but they make you laugh and are a great deal of fun.

I hope you are able to check out some of my videos. Some of them are really funny.

I wondered what Heinz and JoAnn were up to these days.

Heinz and Joanne are doing the Podengo thing with me !!  If you visit our club website, you will see the their 3rd generation female Kontessa !

Over the last 3 years, Heinz has had his hips replaced and both knees replaced....
Joanne had back surgery as well.

Joanne actually spotted the breed at Crufts in 2004 when she visited me in the UK. We had been looking for a small breed to take to the shows for about 5 years....this breed grabbed us and we never looked back !!!

It's been a ton of work getting them through the AKC machine...but we're getting close to the end now !!!

That's very neat.  I've wanted a Pomeranian sooooo bad for a couple years, but never found a good breeder within reasonable distance, felt I could not justify spending 3500 on a Pom, but I am still lookin' if anyone knows a breeder in the Midwest or that I can trust to ship without seeing.

Hi Lyn,
The one in the dolphin movie was a Medio. Actually I think the last movie that dog did was Lakehouse. She died about a year ago.The movie company has a new one out. I saw it in a commerical recently.

So far we haven't gotten any of the littles (Pequeno's) out into commercials however there are some in MA that pose for a pet catalog.

The small wires were nearly extinct and in 1984 the zoo of lisbon stepped in to save them.

The grandes (bigs) are very endangered with very few registered in Portugal since most are in working bore hunting packs.

Jeanne Heger is a UKC judge and Pom breeder. I think she's in the OH area.
Contact UKC (www.ukcdogs.com)  for her contact details.
She's a lovely person. I met her in WA at the Washington Cluster. She will be judging in MS in a few weeks.

Since our breed has not had access to AKC events yet, we have been actively participating in UKC events.

They look like neat dogs alright, but any more holes dug in the back yard not immediately filled with landscape enhancing flora and my landlord would shoot me!
