If that's the way you feel, fine.

My point in posting this was to show that attitudes toward animals in China ARE changing, and a lot of it is the result of outside pressure, as well as the rise of an affluent middle class which keeps dogs and cats as pets.

There are some traditions in China which should be of concern to North Americans. Body parts from various North American wild animals are used in traditional Chinese medicines, or sold as expensive delicacies in restaurants. Often these parts are obtained and exported illegally, by poachers. The poachers have no ethics whatsoever. They will shoot a bear, remove its paws and its gallbladder, then leave the rest of the carcass to rot in the woods.

When this is happening in MY country, in my own backyard, it DOES become my business.

"They need a Walmart Super store and then they could be just like us.

I can hear the Chinese....No Walmart, No crap in our neighborhoods."

Uh, they have Walmarts in China: www.wal-martchina.com/english/walmart/wminchina.htm

Sunsilver - I agree, bear paws and gall bladders, rhino tusks ect....... all these magical meats......the black market trade is huge. Many of these things are all ready illegal in China, yet is doesn't stop. Very sad!

Of course they have Walmarts in China,
I don't believe they have a middle class.

They can have Walmart, its all their junk anyway.
Except for the Mexican produce.

China has been bitten by the beast, now they hurry to catch up.
You can still disappear in China for disagreeing with the government.

Google has blood on their hands and now wants to pass the buck off on someone else.

One of the most polluted countries on earth.

In Australia the Aborigine people club and eat the feral cats cause they are killing some of the protected species there. In many of the Asian countries they kill and eat dog, cat, duck fetus, donkey and so many other things that we think aren't right. If you are raised on that though and that is a part of their culture who are we to say what is right and wrong. I don't think eating Lassie is right....but that is their way.Chow Chows were considered "the edible dog". No wonder why everyone hates the US we butt our nose in to other countries business.

I prefer my "edible dog" to be of the hotdog variety.  If anyone is serving Chow-chow, they better tell me!

I really have to laugh at this!  I'm a Canadian, quoting an article published in the U.K. LavK-9 , you think EVERYTHING revolves around the good o'l U. S. of A., don't you?

The main force behind the changes was the Bejing OLYMPICS for heaven's sake! You can't get much more global than that!

And it's not just the EATING that's the problem. If it were, the international community wouldn't be crying out against this so strongly. China is one of the few cultures that has never had any animal protection legislation whatsoever. Animals are kept in terribly inhumane conditions. Some Chinese believe that adrenaline helps to make the meat more tender, so animals are often beaten to death before being butchered. There is much more to this movement than just banning the eating of dogs and cats! A whole culture is starting to look at itself, and say, "Hey, maybe this isn't such a good thing. Maybe we need to change..."  We should be rejoicing that they are able to do that.

Sunsilver, I sure hope they ban the sale and eating of cats and dogs and I especially hope do something about the animal cruelty in China.  Of course being a vegetarian, I wish everyone would stop eating animals altogether, but that is another subject.

I hope they are forced to follow a few simple human rights laws.
The whole world will be watching.

Do you know how many families have been uprooted from their homes to make room for the Olympics?

As for eating meat, humans would not have been able to inhabit the globe without the practice of hunting meat, following herds, and eventually raising animals for meat.
It was meant to be.
And one culture does not have the right to tell another what they can and can't eat according to that cultures beliefs.

Yeah thats another subject all together.
