grain free doesnt mean less protein. and there are multiple higher content life stages foods that do well for pups and stable growth. But we all have different dietary opinions and have proven results so it depends on your dog and what you want out of your dog. plus i think we would all agree a nice balanced raw diet is best.

Ok, found Vet's Choice...not bad, but I don't see how you could compare it to Orijen...it's got a bunch of grain in it.

I feed all of the Solid Gold products except Barking at the Moon, my coats went to hell.  Even on Wolf Cub.

Yoschy, Jyl meant that Natural Balance grain free formulas are lower in protein than other grain free formulas. I think everyone knows grain free is higher protein, not lower generally.

I feed my dogs the Salmon one. There are great ingredience....human grade as well and for what is in it....not that bad of a price.Atleast where I get it it isn't. The stuff I was feeding that caused my dog to get a UTI or some sort of infection was more in price and caused him problems.SO I am not feeding that again!!

Hate... Solid Gold foods...........fed it when it first came out......many, many years ago......yuck!...my dog's coats were horrible, and they could not keep a good weight & muscle tone.
Love the EVO products!  (PRICEY) yes.....but worth it.        Also;...check into B.G. (stands for.. Before grain)...Buffalo, Chicken or Salmon.....costs less than Evo.

Robin,
I had the exact same experience with Solid Gold Hunde Flocken some years age.  My dogs blew their coats, lost weight and muscle.  I was feeding my females 6 - 7 cups a day and my male over 8 cups a day.  I couldn't feed enough of that food to put weight on my dogs.  If I remember correctly it was like 8 % fat.  It took months to get them back to the condition they were in before switching to Solid Gold.  I know some people like it but my experience was not good.

I had the same issue with my dogs....Xena especially. She lost 6 pounds in 2 weeks.....all the dogs coats got brittle and they all lost weight and muscle tone. It took 4-6 months to get our dogs looking good again.

You cannot compare apples with oranges.

Whilst grain has protein it is, apart from soy which is not recommended for dogs anyway, incomplete protein.

Therefore when looking at protein you must look at:

whether or not it is complete or incomplete
how digestible it is

feeding grain makes complete dog foods cheaper, not better.........
