You are right, it varies state to state! Where I am employed, it is a maximum of 5 years imprisonment plus restitution to the agency.

Great so these thugs will get out after a year of two to do this again?  I don't understand that at all.  Calif. being the worst.  That makes me feel real secure.

 RIP Blek.  I am sure he was a great, great dog.

But some of you folks need to get a grip.  Do you really want your government to have the right to send dogs after you and then condemn you to long prison sentences for protecting yourself from bodily harm when bitten?

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Suspects are innocent until proven guilty.  Or so we like to say when we imagine we still have something worth caring about in the US.

Innocent people do not run from the police.

Innocent people do all sorts of things -- some certainly run from police who they think mean to harm them first and listen to them second.  Some just run because they are afraid.  Some innocent people turn themselves into the police AFTER discussion with their attorney and AFTER skirting initial police confrontations.  We must try to remember that people in a democracy are innocent until proven guilty -- what have we left if we lose that?  

If you run and resist arrest, you must expect to be treated more roughly.  But you do not give up your right to protect your life or person or the life of your friend. 

MVF -- then are you saying that if it was the Officer who came upon the Suspect -- instead of the Police Dog -- it would have been OK for the suspect to kill the Officer?   Hell, I wish they had sent out 2 or 3 dogs on their sorry asses.

MVF Nobody can accuse me of being for over reaching governmental power, but you are way off base. Your quote about absolute power is not applicable here. That is applicable to matters of freedom and not to commission of a crime. This is not Archipelago Gulag of Stalinist regime, where you need to be afraid of absolute power. Not yet anyway.
Those thugs protected their well being against police dog in commission of a crime. They put them selves into position where any damage which they did during that time could be used against them. Like   them killing the the police K9 or  spilling someone's beer.  No I am not surprised  that they did not want to get bitten, but if that is the case they should not brake into a house to steal and then run from police. If you run from police bad things may and should happen to you.
