He didn't know she was pregnant until she was about a month into it. I don't think there was ever a discussion w/ the vet about terminating the pregnancy. As bad as it was, it could have been prevented by keeping the damn dog confined while in heat, instead of listening to the other advice (from his grandmother) that she was watching what the dog was doing outside and would catch any other dogs that came around before they could breed her. Never mind that no one can keep their eyes on the dog 24 hours a day and see everything....I'm not getting started on this subject.
I finally had to shake my head and step back, pray that the ignorance of these people wouldn't cost the dog her life. I'm the idiot of the family, I guess...Both of my dogs are spayed, neither had a pregnancy, they are both healthy weight, etc.
You can't educate someone who is an expert...You know that.
I learned the hard way, as I was growing up, about dogs and pregnancy, all that. Nutrition was something that came along a while later, but I always fed by condition, regardless of the quality of the food. I know a lot more now than I ever did then, and I learn more every day, from this list and others. I pray that I never get to be such an expert that I cannot learn something new...May my dogs never suffer from such brilliance:-)

I don't think you need to worry about that! You are down to earth and you pay attention and learn. The hard part is stepping back and letting others learn from their mistakes. I hear ya on trying to educate an expert! I have some in my family too. I can't make a suggestion without someone giving me a hard time for even suggesting they use their heads for something besides a hatrack. Some people would rather go on being ignorant instead of entertaining the idea that someone else might have a point. SIGH.

That is how a male GSD should be built, IMO.

Jim,
You ever have anyone tell you that your dog is emaciated and that you're a horrible person for making him starve?
I've heard that a few times.
