CrysBuck25

by CrysBuck25 on 18 August 2009 - 00:08

I have some new pics to upload a bit later...No time now!

We had a great weekend in the mountains...About fifty miles the other side of the middle of nowhere!  Oakley had a blast, and you really couldn't tell she was blind, not at all!

I'll put up some new pics here a bit later...My father in law's birthday was yesterday and I'm making him a belated birthday cake!  Lots of work to do right now, but I'll get some pics up later!

Hi All,

Okay, let's try this again.  I just had a whole bunch of new pics on here, and something went nuts and I lost them all, had to close out and restart.  Here goes...

These are pics from our weekend trip to the other side of the middle of nowhere.

Steph, this pic is the one I told you I'd get...Oakley was rooting for a chip she heard my oldest daughter drop, and you can see her ribs when she puts her head down like this.  They are not visible when she is standing upright.  I think she's about where she should be, not that I could get her fat if I wanted to, since she's got a lot of energy and is eating about five cups of food a day right now.

What a pretty girl!  I really love the color and pattern Oakley is developing...And her ears are mostly straight now, though sometimes they still teepee...

Okay, don't panic!  Oakley was in no danger here, not at all.  She's extremely smart.  She would lay near the fire, but she never got close to stepping in it, and never got any closer to it than about twenty four inches. She's acutely aware of her surroundings at all times, more so than Misty or the black lab that our camping partner had with him.  She was really on the ball, learned our camp area, hiked everywhere we did, even discovered she liked huckleberries, especially if she didn't have to pick them (out of my bucket).

This is cute.  The way she's looking up with that right eye, tells you she can't see, but that's about the only way that you can tell.

This picture was taken of my oldest daughter and Oakley.  I cropped the pic to remove her face, for reasons some of you might remember, though it steals some of the wonder of this pic.  But it give you an idea of how big Oakie is now, as does the one below, which is really sweet.

I have a few more that I will upload when I get  a little more time, but here are some for now.  Enjoy them, as I enjoyed the time taking them, and the rest of time with my babies, and Oakie!

Hey Crys

I am still new to the site, but I understand from the mails that Oakley is blind.  Is she completely blind or just partially?  My oldest GSD turned 12 about a week ago and she has turned completely blind as well, but I have noticed how her other senses picked right up, even though she is really old her sens of smell and hearing are excellent and in 5min, she will know exactly where everything is when we are in a new place.  Sometimes I am worried that she will fall of things or into things and hurt herself when we are in the park walking, so I always stay close by and it helps that she comes immediately whenever I call.  For anyone that doesn't know, she seems to be just like all the other dogs!

Good luck with your girl, it is wonderful to know there are people like you still out there :)  Two thumps up!

Tharina,

Yes, Oakley is completely blind, has been from birth.  This doesn't limit her in any way, though.  She is every bit as capable of making her way around.  Even stepping down from something that she is unfamiliar with, such as someone's deck, or a set of stairs, she listens to the sound of someone else going down, or stepping down, and reacts accordingly.  It's pretty incredible to watch.

They are not handicapped when they lose their sight.  Unlike humans, it seems dogs can live their lives pretty smoothly no matter what they have to deal with.  We could learn a lot from our dogs.

Crys,

You are doing an awesom job raising that beautiful girl.  So very glad you stepped up and took her in.  And now it looks like you have a buddy to compare notes with, Tharina!  I bet you can give her lots of tips!  Bravo for the both of you!  And thanks for the fix!  I'm going to try to get some pics of Echo working and if they turn out I will get some posted.
