P.S.  Do you notice that only 185 people pulled up this thread!!!  Lots of interest in our dogs future huh.  If you had posted a thread on some off the wall topic it might have 1-2k people reading it, and a hundred commenting on it.  I guess this shows where peoples heads are at.  As far as I am concerned, in the toilet.  If these bills continue to pass, it is only going to get worse and when that happens this board will no longer have a purpose.  Peta, humane societies, all animal activists all have an agenda, and we are only seeing the beginning.  How they love to portray themselves as animal lovers and have the money to hire movie stars to make their pitch, give enormously exagerated facts, and use every trick in the book to play on peoples heart strings.  I am absalutely discusted with the apathy, self centeredness of this site.  If it does not effect me personally, why bother.

olskoolgsd, i didn't bother opening this topic for a long time because it said California, and I'm on the east coast. Really, the topic header assumes everyone knows what it is all about. I don't think all animal rights non-profits are the same, either. Lots of these laws start with an altruistic thought. It is when badly written, hard-to-enforce laws are passed based on them, that is not good.

by AnnikasMom on 05 June 2009 - 19:06

Ironic that you should bring up the lack of interest in this thread, I had the same thought the other day. I have not posted on this thread before because Louise and I posted the exact same thoughts at the same time on 2 different boards. Great minds... I have done everything I can to fight this bill and feel it is the responsibility of everyone in CA that enjoys the companionship of a dog or cat to do so also. These guys are sneaky, we defeated the last bill they tried to get past us so they laid low for awhile and changed the name of the bill and here we are again fighting for our rights as pet owners, breeders, K9 officers, SAR groups, guide dog owners and so on and so on. If you are not in CA but have family and friends in CA PLEASE pass on the links regarding this bill and ask them to take a few minutes out of their day to help defeat this bill! HSUS and PETA have the funds to pass this but we can fight them just like we did last time with our voices of opposition!! We vote for these idiots and we can make a difference in how they vote for SB 250 but we can't do it without making an effort to fax and call our local representatives!!

it's a neverending battle with these bills. i've signed already, called, etc.  most people don't think past their initial reaction to spaying/neutering, so they don't see the pitfalls. on the other hand, my friend's family just got a really lovely little siberian husky pup. she really is a nice nice pup, AND now dad and daughter want her to have babies cuz she's so pretty! i burst their bubble (maybe) about breeding a dog with no pedigree, no knowledge about her background (any genetic probs, etc) and told them that if they wanted to "see the miracle of birth" i'd first take them to the pound to see "the miracle of euthanasia". i was not the most popular girl in class :(    but, they should have the right to make that (stupid) decision on their own, not by government decree.

I agree wholeheartedly.  Every one of these laws is dedicated not to the protection of animals, but to the eventually extinction of all domesticated ones.

They don't give two hoots about how many dogs or cats are euthanized.  They are all about money, and extermination.

I hope the people get their heads out of the sand and start reminding those losers in govt that they are answerable to US, and not the other way around.

I didn't pull up this thread because I thought SB 250 was some kind of German initials for yet another germanic type GSD terminology - like SV, or ScH, or Bh or... and I'm completely disinterested in it.  I just figured it was another show or sport trial in California.

by olskoolgsds on 06 June 2009 - 06:06

I apologize if I was over the top in lumping everyone together in my last email.  This is THE topic that boils my blood.  Beetree, I have not met or heard of any animal rights groups that are not in some way tied to this type of mentality.  I can tolerate puppy mills, that is always going to be here, I can tolerate someone like angusmom talked about, that type of thinking is always going to be here.  I can tolerate just about any thing in the dog world and those that are involved in it, even some of the nonsense that comes on this site.  But the animal rights groups are bound and determined to take away the rights of every dog loving fancier, Schutzhund, LE. home protecter, and all that have been mentioned by angusmom.
Our basic rights, the rights that many fought for including myself are being trashed.  All to satisfy a few with a hiden agenda.

By the way beetree, if you do not realize  Peta and the likes are  funding or helping these other groups, than I think you are too naive.  This is not meant to be a put down, unfortunately this is why they are succeeding.  They rely on ignorance, naivety, emotionalism without research and clear thinking, a deep pocket, Hollywood stars that love the publicity and are also clueless, politicians that do not have their head in the real world and sublimina messages that move too many to react without investigating.

I personally know close friends that are all behind these bills simply because they only hear the one side and  the one side always sounds right until you hear both sides.  We, the mainstream dog lovers (true dog lovers) do not have the clout behind us. No real lobbying voice to counter all of the exagerated figures and out right lies these orgs throw out there.
It is a one sided battle.  These type of laws will have a catastrophic impact on our breed, watch and see.  Being able to say "I told you so", will be of no consilation to me.  I would rather see those that are into working dogs, good breedings, and just plain love our gsds join the battle.  But I also know human nature, and until it is in our own back yard, we will be happy to sit and do nothing, dreaming away that it will not happen in their state.  I have taken long enough, so for any that have read this long post, thank you and please do something.

by angusmom on 06 June 2009 - 16:06

i've mentioned this book before on old threads, but, if you can get your hands on one, read "The Hijacking of the Humane Movement" by Rod and Patti Strand. it was originally published in 1993, but is still pertinent.  it shows the other side of the so-called "humane movement". peta and hsus do not care about animals and their relationships to man. peta especially wants all domestic animals "free".  where would they go? don't see too many jersey cows in the wild, not too many wild and free packs of pugs taking down groundhogs....domestic animals would not exist if they were not connected in some way to mankind.  peta and hsus spend their enormous amounts of money on things like lawsuits and intrusive bills (like california sb 250), not on the health and care of animals. anyway, watch out for this crap in your own states or countries and, if you're a californian, get on the phone, email and keep doing it!

I urge ALL to sign and fight this and any like it!

Seems like a never ending battle, we win and then the politicians slide another one under the door with a new name before we know it. I swear the Govt is going to turn me into a criminal because I will refuse if this shit passes, I wont lop my dogs balls off, I wont hand over my guns and I'm starting to think screw filing my taxes, if all they do is take and then wright IOU's. I'm not behind on a mortgage and I'm not on assistance. I will never be able to retire (no soc security/medicare) taxed to death so I can't put a nest egg aside and I may never have my own healthcare again. My Govt is fighting against me, not for me. It's really very tiresome.

Thanks to everybody to makes this crap public so we don't go down without a fight. Soon enough we wont be able to take a shit without the Govt's hand in it. I'll call it the "turd tax". Our Gov't is growing and soon they wont be missing from any aspect of our lives and that my folks ISN'T freedom.
