did you not realise that giving the Pup so much to drink and eat would probably do it harm, and it could well have done so
I will go off Dogs to racing pigeons to show this point
When i practised Karate a long time ago i was taught only by one old man for ten years, he showed me and taught me all he knew , that was what i thought, Training went beyond the Norm and i was taught pressure points and how to disable and even possibly kill without hardly leaving a mark on the body but never the less none of that counts, one day i had been working for 9 hours in a hot day then off to Karate for three hours I did something i never did before i drank a glass of cold water straight down, and seconds later i hit the floor so my Master told me, it was well over an hour before i could get on my motor bike to go home
three days later he told me the shock of the water on my system had made my heart stop for a short time and he bought me round again
I never did that again
And since that day when my pigeons home  from a race they never get anything to eat or drink for 20 minutes, I wait for there insides to cool down, they having gone without water fot about 20  hours or so, For them to drink there fill would knock them up completly, and d so it is with a Pup travelling all that time
The Pigeons and your Pup most likely had water to drink en route but it is noy that they would drink
More so with Young Pigeons and Pups all is new and strange to them so water is not in there minds
