Yes, the dog needs to have at least a Sch1 but  also must have a show rating of  "G" or better and an AD. The dog's hips also have to be certified.

Wow you all have been very helpful and I think I will try this kkl thing out. To me it seems way easier than a Schutzhund routine.

Very clever thinking...! But,unfortunately, the dog has to have a sch title BEFORE you do the KKL. Man, always something, huh?

alot of times on a breed survey weekend a conformation show will be offered the day before, so that can be done on the same weekend.  And in some places they'll even have a Schutzhund trial/AD on the same weekend as well.   :)

Luckily for my guys, they both had the HGH title, so I didn't have to get an AD on them.

Its all part of maintaining the quality of the breed.
Unless things have changed, It IS possible to do the Korung on a Saturday and the show on Sunday at the same event with the blessing of the Kormeister-Zuchtrichter.

Mark, it's really not difficult to do.  The posts here have been excellent.  You will probably need to travel to a club to do the AD and that takes some training for the dog.  You will also need to travel to a club to do the breed survey as your club doesn't hold conformation shows.  The protection routine is not difficult, any dog that can get a SchH 1 can do it.  Training the attack out of the blind is different than what you normally do in yor club's training but is not difficult.  We used to heel the dog around the blind with the helper in it 3 or 4 times before the helper comes out to engage the dog.   So the dog doesn't anticipate it.  We would start by a short attack out of the blind in the beginning then work up to the heeling around the blind.  It has been some years since I've KKL a dog.  You will need either an "A" stamp or OFA as well.  Watch the videos of the USA siegar Show or better yet the BSZS.  Some of the dogs at the USA SS were weak but you'll see the routine, they are posted on youtube.  It is definitely worthwhile to do it.

I'm pretty sure that the SV now requires an elbow rating as well.

Training for the attack out of the blind was not all that difficult.  I think that for my girl we only did it three times maybe and that was only a month before the survey.  We too heeled the dog around the helper in the blind so the dog wouldn't anticipate.  I also remember is practice we used the entire field.  ie:  6 blinds and heeled up to various blinds without the dog knowing which blind the helper was in.

I definitely enjoyed the process and liked hearing what the judge had to say about my dogs.   Then anticipating  what number we were going to get.   LOL
