Yes, that is what I meant with my female also, her vulva hardly seemed to swell at all when she was in heat the first few times and she had very little bleeding, I relied on the males to let me know... but with later heats (after her first litter) it did swell more normally. The vagina was also tight, it was difficult to breed her and I never managed it with the (big) male of my choice, though recently she did breed with no problem. This was also the problem with the daughters, I do not know if the vulva swelled or not on them. I think females vary a lot, some swell and bleed very noticibly from the first time. I wonder if it depends on hormone levels and maybe these also affect the chances of becoming pregnant? I was hoping for one more litter from my female bt it probably won't happen now. I was also thinking of thyroid testing...

I have seen many dogs with what is called a vaginal stricture.  This is a small banding area of the vagina.  It can be broken during mating with a very strong male, but this can cause more scar tissue and make the stricture worse. The stricture can be cut by the vet, but again more scar tissue can develop. My vet told me it was prevelant within the GSD breed.  I did a surgical implant on one girl who had 9 puppies by C section.  Wont breed another one with this kind of problem.  It is genetic as her daughter had the same thing.  Some AI's will work and the bitch may have the pups naturally as the elastin in the bitches system before whelping will losen the stricture enough for the pups to move through.  Allot of times this will take care of the stricture, it all depends on the severity of it. I have seen probably a dozen girls afflicted with this and I have them spayed.  They make good companion animals and it doesnt cause any troubles later.
