Hello Peggy... I am going to zug Germany next month and wondered if you found any good breeders to work with over there. How much trouble is it to buy and bring home a pup. what about customs and airlines?
Regards,

It's interesting to hear that most breeders across the pond don't offer any kind of guarantee. I personally wouldn't want to buy a puppy without a good guarantee. In the game of "puppy roulette" I'm clearly jinxed. I've had poor temperments, soft ears, one testicle,... oy! I'm just waiting for my young male to turn 2 so I can get final OFA's. I figure I'm due for bad hips next!
However, as to the recommendation to buy an older dog instead of taking a chance on a puppy, that's no magic bullet either. Two years I bought a very well pedigreed GSD from an excellent kennel in Germany and the dog turned out to be a spook. Although I got a refund for the cost of the dog, I still lost $1,000 on shipping, fees, vet bills (the dog was sick with I got him), etc.
I decided I'd rather buy a puppy and take my chances with his development, provided I had a good guarantee from the breeder. I wrote my own guarantee and asked the breeder to sign it, which he did, and darn good thing too because the first pup I got only had one testicle descend. I got a replacement with zero hassle.
My husband is getting into SchH (yeeha!) and he's decided on getting a Mali. We talked about the puppy vs. young adult choice, but we decided we'd rather buy a puppy and start with a fresh slate so that we can be in control of the dog's environment, socializing, exercise, and diet.
Nevertheless I'm sure there's been many satisfied customers who have imported a pup from European countries, with or without guarantees. Perhaps some of these folks can relate their positive experiences, and any suggestions for a smooth transaction???

Peggy,
Do you have a private email address? There is not one listed on your profile. I know a German breeder who does guarantee pups. :)

Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances. I'll guarantee anything if ya pays me enough.

The reason German breeders do not offer a guarantee is because German Consumer Protection Law is already giving extensive warrantees. Yes, dogs are considered merchandise when it comes to law, unfortunately. The only problem for overseas buyers is that they have to enforce their claims in the German court system. And that is a long and expensive effort and not worth a refund of a puppy.

Oh My God! VomFelsenhof, I can't believe you have the nerve to even post on this forum! And yet here you are, publicly enticing someone to email you "privately" as you always do, to lure them into another one of your import schemes? How dare you!
What about the dog YOU contacted ME about "privately" in November 2006 about? Talking me into buying this female dog you "knew" about, through a person you "knew" of in Germany? Talking me into sending you $3,1042.00 over 5 mths ago and STILL you have not sent me my dog? Where's MY money? Where's my dog?
How dare you try your sneaky schemes again with your supposed German dogs and puppies, let alone on this forum? What you do on your own website is your business, but looking for victims here is too much. Why don't you crawl back in the hole you have been hiding in, it's where you belong in My Opinion!

There are many reputable breeders in europe - they title their dogs - they have studied genetics - the proof is in what they produce. Much better to import one of these "unguaranteed" puppies than to buy a dud regardless of what the guarantees are.
