Two Moons

I'm trying to imagine a six week old puppy mauling anything.     Playing maybe.

These stories lack so much substance.

I'd like to hear mom's story.

I've been a medic and firefighter for more than a few years.  I am always amazed at the stories I hear about children left unattended and dogs mauling the small kids.

1. 3 questionably trained pit bulls mauled and killed a 3 yr and 5 yr old left unattended while mom and dad were out smoking crack with friends.  They were heart broken the dogs were going to be put down since they could always have more kids but never "good protection dogs like these".

2. found dead baby that had been eaten by hungry dogs in the home, parents said dogs killed the baby but you could tell the chewing was post not peri mortem.

I could go on.  This whole story sounds fishy and I wish just once that the media would get the whole story rather than sensationalizing it for circulation numbers.

I was curious too when I first saw this if the baby was already dead.  The police officer sure seemed like the bites were pretty severe, I love how grandma is sitting in the back smoking.

What is with all the irrational stories lately?  Does no one have any common sense anymore?!! I can’t figure out why a puppy would be unattended in the first place. An 8 week old puppy killing something its own size?   I can't buy it.  There has to be more to this story. I Certainly hope these people never own another dog or have more children, for that matter.

4pack , Dude, you really shouldn't hold back so much, it could be bad for your health.  Let it out every now and then!  (you are completely correct BTW).

Animules and others,

This is not new for me. I hear situations like this all the time. And I get requests to take dogs who have just bitten someone all the time. Last week it was some moron whose GSD had just bitten his new girlfriend and her three boys. He wondered if I could take the dog and place it. And gee, the dog had never done anything like that before.

I got a phone call two weeks ago from someone in another state asking me if I could accept her 7 year old GSD into my rescue program. The reason she was considering giving up the dog was as follows:

There was a family gathering. All the family went in the house or was elsewhere while the woman's 18 month old granddaughter was left unattended outside with the GSD. People in the house heard the baby screaming, only to run out and find the dog had the baby pinned to the ground and that it had bitten the baby, requiring some stitches. I cannot sayon a public internet site what I said to this woman. Some of you find fault with me because I do not suffer fools and am very direct and mince no words. But the jist of it was that she was lucky that the dog did not accidentally or purposely kill or seriously maul the child. I asked her what on earth were they thinking to leave a child unattended with a dog? It was as if I had asked her to most difficult question ever put to her in her life and she had no idea. Initially, when I said she was lucky the baby was not mauled seriously or dead, she said, and I quote "really"?.

Bottom line, too many people are idiots about children and dogs. In this situation, it is a 17 year old mother, a grandmother who looks like she is on crack, and a weirdo father, at the very least, who have not one, but two unsupervised dogs. I seriously doubt as well that the 8 week old lab pup caused the death initially, but none the less, forensic examination and an autopsy will clarify this and which dog/s mauled the child. The child might have died and then the dogs found it. What is so troubling however is once again we see people who have no regard for the potential problems arising from unsupervised interaction between dogs and children, in this case, infants. Like Mystere wrote days ago, we require licenses and testing for so many things in our country, but for perhaps THE most important responsibility, that of being a parent, we require nothing of people. Absurd and so tragic it makes me want to vomit.

Someone called me names last week because I refused to sell them a dog because they have small children and based on a lengthy conversation, not enough sense to know how to deal with dogs and children. That is fine. I sleep well at night.

ocoey, I'm a female, so Dudette is the correct term. LOL I just get really aggrivated at how stupid people can be and still manage to survive. Unfortunate for this child, his parents didn't kick off first! 3 people in that house and not one checked on the baby? Morons all 3! They should be locked up, I feel no pitty for anyone but the puppy and the baby.

My apologies, 4-pack. Dudette it is!  Just made me chuckle.  I've never seen you so...er....emphatic (maybe I haven't been here long enough?).  Like I said I completely agree.

Hodie, I don't know how you do what you do!  Must be hard not giving some people a shake.  Maybe not pulling punches will make them stop and think.  Someone sure as hell needs to tell them!

I cannot believe how stupid some people can be!  I for instance have an inlaw apt attached to my house, my mom lives there, she has Alz. do you think for one second I would leave her alone w/my gsd, I have gone so far as, her place is attached to my house via the dining room, the french doors are locked if I am not w/her.  I have a lockable half door between my kitchen and living room, the dining room has become a no dog zone and I am still on my toes.

 Ocoey,

I have learned over my long life that all too often people are NOT direct, do NOT stand up for what they believe in and further, are too chicken shit to speak out. I do not purposely ever try to hurt someone's feelings. But I tell it like it is and when it comes to things like this, that sadly will be sensationalized and then contribute to the anti-dog legislation in one way or another, yes, I speak out directly and loudly. Some people get it, but others don't. At least I try to make a difference and that i all one can do.

by hodie on 29 July 2008 - 20:07

zukeeper,

You are wise. I doubt your dog would ever harm your mother, but with alzheimers' she also does not know how to interact with a dog and sometimes weird things happen. At the very least, these dogs are large and can knock someone down. I am old now and my skin, for example, is getting very fragile. Because I am always getting nipped training (accidentally), bumping into the kennel doors, etc., my arms and legs are often bruised. I work hard to make the dogs go slowly in and out of the kennels simply because if I am not watching, they could knock me into next week. It is always wise to use some good common sense.

And how is your old girl doing today?
