OUCH

You guys have some very painfull stories.....

MI_GSD, wow. Just one of my toenails was ripped off, I could NOT imagine having a few ripped off.....

Luckily my toe feels alot better today, Im going to bite the bullet and try to enjoy a day of training and frolicking in the woods!

Now that I have a good dog, I am finding Im developing an addiction to training. We both enjoy it so much =D

Okay, stupid owner story here...

Tasha was my second GSD. My first one was very meek and mild, and never gave me any problems with training, but Tasha had a mind of her own. When I first adopted her, it was impossible to get her to recall off leash unless she wanted to come.

So, having read about this in a training book, I got a 40 ft. length of light sash cord, and attached a clip to it. I took her and my room-mate's dog to the local park, and let them off their leashes. Tasha, was, of course, still wearing the sash cord, and I had hold of the other end of the line.

She and Brandy took off full tilt across the park, and here's me, thinking I'm going to stop 65 lbs. of dog when she hits the end of that line.

She yanked me off my feet and I did a complete somersault. I lost skin off the fingers of both hands, and still have a scar on my left ring finger, which caught the worst of the rope burn.

Needless to say, the NEXT time I tried this, I tied a loop in the cord, and dropped it over a fencepost.

Eventually, she did get to the point where we could have a nice off-leash walk together, but now and then she'd take off after something, and ignore my recall. I was never more proud of her than the day we both spotted a skunk about 20 feet away at the same moment, and she instantly obeyed me when I shouted, "TASHA...HALT!"

That helped make up for the OTHER three times in her life when she and the skunk actually met....

My showline girl and I were trialing for our AD.  I had her on a leash, running beside me on the trail (a converted former RailRoad track line turned into a hiking, biking trail).  The judge was about  100 yards behind us.  Storm usually would run flat out for the first two miles, then settle into her stride when we had trained.  On the first mile, a pheasant flys out in front of us.  My dog leaps up and crosses in front of my  tire, twisting my bike and me.  We crashed to the gravel.  I still held onto the leash, even though my wrist and shoulder hurt and blood was seeping down my leg.  I managed to get back up, fix my bike, and throughly check the dog over.  She was fine, just looking at me like "you dummy, didn't you see that big bird.  I just had to get it!"   The judge asked if I was OK and wanted to contunue.  I was smarting, and humiliated, but determined to go on.    We continued the next 11 miles and received our AD!  The next day I ordered a springer.  LOL!

Not really a serious injury but boy was it unconfortable.  I am Big boned (much like cartman from south park) and I enjoy going for long walks on our  gravel roads in the country.  I was walking two of my dogs (fluffy and speedbump) at about a mile from the house they went from walking loose lined by my side to chasing a squirrel.  I slid in the gravel much like water skiing until I hit the concrete part of a person drive where it ripped the soles off of my shoes.  I really did'nt get hurt but that was one long mile home in july ....
