The  perioxide, baking soda and a dash of Dawn recipe definitely works the best! I also live on a farm and I seem to have my dogs get skunked every year.  I've had to use it on my dogs and me.

3 years ago, in a month period we had 3 skunks come around, the 1st one my dad shot in the head, the 2nd one my Czech import Katie killed (she was the reason I didn't have cats!), the 3rd skunk attacted 3 GSD's thru a 4 foot wielded wire fence! The skunk was in the horse pasture and the dogs were in their 2 acre fenced in play area and the skunk attacted them thru the fence. Katie finally ripped the head off the skunk, then pulled it's body thru the wielded wire fence (the squares were 2 in x 4 in) and came over and dropped the skunk at my feet! Definitely one present I really didn't want! By the time I got all the blood cleaned off the dogs, I had blood all over my arms from all the scratches and bites on the dogs. I sent the skunk's head in to be tested and sure enough the skunk had rabies! All 3 dogs plus my 4 month old puppy all had to be quarinteened for 45 days, even though they had just had their rabies vaccination 2 weeks before. I also had to go thru all the rabies shots too, since the head was ripped off the skunk and the spinal fluid is high in the rabies virus and I had blood all over me.

I guess the moral of this story is if you see a skunk during the day SHOOT IT! All 3 skunks we saw were all during the daytime and skunks are nocturnal, so it is unusual to see them during the day. I now keep a gun loaded, just in case I see another skunk.

Aye Capt. !  Be they lubber's or be they Pirates?   I'd be looking to expand my horizons once the fair wind blows and lifes not such a chore around here.    Be they cute as baby skunks?

Krebaum's website says Dawn is NOT as good soap to use. Ivory liquid or Soft Soap:

Two preferred brands are "Softsoap" and "Ivory Liquid". As far as auto-decomposition of the peroxide is concerned, the surfactant package in these two is fairly inert. Heavy-duty grease-cutting brands such as "Dawn" are less inert, and hair shampoo is probably the worst.

MNGSDLUVR  That is horrible for you and your dogs about the rabies.

Any time I see a nocturnal creature be it opossum, raccoon, bat or skunk during the daylight hours I head for the varmit rifle, it's a sure bet they have rabies if they are out in the daylight.

Another creature to look out for this time of year as it warms up are the venemous SNAKES.  Springtime is beautiful but brings out lots of dangers for dogs running free through the woods and pastures. I've learned to learn the different pitch barking of my dogs to know which varmit or animal they have uncovered. If it is intense continuous barking I know it's probably a snake, high pitched barking in short intervals is usually a rabbit (which carry tapeworm-$25.00 a pill if they eat it before I get to them) or a squirrel and they'll give them chase.

One dog was bitten by a juvenille copperhead last year before I could get to her (she'll kill any snake she comes across) the others stayed away with the "leave it" command. I always carry a large walking stick with me and killed the snake which also allowed me to ID it for the vet for appropriate treatment. Her face swelled up like a balloon but I only am minutes away from my vet's office and she was fine by the next day with appropriate meds.

I'll even probably start carrying the varmit rifle with me on our hikes at this time of year again, I usually come across at least one snake, not always venemous, however. We try to maintain paths so if a snake is about they are clearly visible when crossing the trails. Keeping the dogs on the trails is another story however.

Yellowrose, I am fairly sure that 'Skunk Off' was the treatment that was used on my dog 4 or 5 times, with limited success. This particlular dog, Tasha, tangled with skunks on 3 occasions during her life, and the ONLY thing that worked was Paul Krebaum's mixture of peroxide and baking soda, with a dash of soap.

Please believe Paul when he says tomato juice doesn't work! It merely changes your stinky pet into a stinky pet with pink fur!

LOL..... a pink dog...:)        I think even just a hose down would help.   I dont know how well some of these other remedies work.   maybe ya just gotta keep the dog outside for a bit.

CCRanch I do worry about snakes but most are useful and I dont kill them.   Kill all the copperheads you like tho.

Dogs handle getting bitten better than humans but its still bad.    Skunks around the house in the yard are usually after grubs, you can get rid of grubs too.

Oh well............  hope it all works out.

It has been about 2 years ago and my friend there is a vet told me to put Tomato-Sauce on them and leave it on for a good 1 hour but keep rubbing it well in to there fur then wash it off if it is still to smelly do it as often as needed.  It will reside in a day no more then two where you can live with them again with out fainting lol    Ps  do not use any chemicals what so ever on them not even a douche.

A few years ago. my girl caught a direct hit from a skunk. Ran back to me rubbing her face on me YUK!! The vet directed me to a product called Skunk Off. It worked super!!!! just a regular shampoo with this stuff, much better after. Good luck

The peroxide mix works, but I think the Skunk Off might be better. Blitz got it a few months ago, I used the peroxide mix a few times and it worked OK after a few treatements. BTW, make sure the peroxide is fresh and unopened or it won't work. He did it right as he rubbed his face all over the indoor-oudoor carpet in the basement. I cleaned that with oxyclean and put some mouth wash in a spray bottle and kept spraying the  rug and Blitz with that. Eventually the smell went away. I don't think you need to treat the entire dog as most get squirted in the face or the side of the neck.
