You have to give the shot to abort the litter within 72 hours.  It prolongs the heat cycle, literally starting it all over again.  This hormone injection is very dangerous and has been linked with Pyometria, a life-threatening infection of the uterus.  Many females must be spayed as a result of pyometria (the alternative is a different hormane therapy which can also be very dangerous), and it is a dangerous surgery as the female is already compromised with a serious infection.  If it were my girl, I'd let her have the pups.  At least they are GSDs.  I'd place them in pet homes if this was not a breeding I wanted to do.

Who knows?  you may get lucky and she won't take.

Good luck,

Susan

Thank you Susan. My wife and I were scared to hurt her. We'll probably just wait and keep our fingers crossed. My vet told me the same thing.

Andy, if you have great luck then she is not pregnant. But we all know how well we can depend on luck, and by the time it can be proven whether or not she is pregnant it is far too late for a chemical abortion.

I had the same thing happen once, and after a long conference with the veterinarian (who in this case is well-versed about canine reproductive issues) I allowed the bitch to bring a very nice litter to full term-shaking my head the entire time. Later on, she passed her hip examination just fine and I breathed a tremendous sigh of relief.

The veterinarian talked me away from the chemical abortion with the question "do you ever intend to breed her?" He felt the risk to her reproductive system (and health) was too great. So, I chickened out and got lucky-can't give anyone but Fate the credit for that. I think your veterinarian has your bitch's best interest on his mind.

Regards,

Bob-O

Morning after pill said to be dangerous for dogs.

I had a similar issue.  My female Golden Retriever managed to escape from her kennel and breed with my male GSD.  I had a contract with the breeder so that she would get back two golden retriever puppies from the bitch, so spaying was not an option.  We did the morning after pill and had no problems.  She went on to have a large litter of healthy (purebred!) puppies a year or so later, the first time we attempted to breed her.  Good luck.
