Don Corleone

by Don Corleone on 11 February 2008 - 19:02

I have always found it funny that humans expect animals to be more social and civilized than other human beings.

Try this one night for fun.  Go to a store, restaurant,  Bar, or any public place.  Go up to a complete starnger of the same sex and get directly into their face and start talking with a high pitched voice.  If you are feeling it, wrap your hands around the head tight and kiss the person on the nose.

Let me know how it works!

* I say same sex for the test because a man may not smack the s#!t out of a woman.

lovedogs,

I think you are a good person by upsetting about yourself. that is not the employee's fault at all as you let her pet your dog. you are the one who should know best about your dog if he has any agression at all. I saw a lot of stupid guys bringing theirs dogs out without any concern about control over the dogs and then blamed other people about trying to be friendly with the dogs. But the most important is what to do after that accident. I would not bring my dogs out and let them get near people and kids without knowing, not thinking, that I had control over my dogs. You should train your dog or have your dog trained to deal with social circumstances, put your dog on leash and muzzle wherever and whenever you bring him out to the public. What will happen when you can not bring your dogs any where because people are afraid of dogs and there are new restrictions due to those bite incidents?

Have a nice day,

Sueincc has said it best. I strongly suggest you read and re-read her post. Thought the PetSmart employee acted in an ignorant manner, indeed, there is NO EXCUSE for a dog biting someone. Yes, the dog may be in jeopardy, and I would think at the very least the person bitten would report this to animal control. And yes, you could be in legal jeopardy and the dog might end up in the shelter awaiting disposition from a court date.

As Sue says, you have learned a lesson the hard way. My strong suggestion is that you realize that you were irresponsible to allow this interaction to take place in the first place. It happened to an employee, and it might have been a child. Your dog has no business in a public place, on or off leash if it reacts this way and I would urge you to contact someone who is highly skilled in working with German Shepherds and get some additional obedience and socialization work done. Even so, a dog who has bitten in this scenario cannot EVER be trusted again. Period. Some here give very poor advice and excuse this incident. They are not doing you or the dog or the breed a favor. This is exactly one of the reasons the breed is in trouble.

People, these are DOGS, not people. They are animals, not people. You are playing with fire to allow interactions like this, even when one has a well socialized and highly trained dog. I would absolutely NEVER allow something like this to occur even though I trust my dogs because they are well socialized. Do you know why? Because if I am too arrogant and WRONG, and my dog bit someone, it is very likely not only would I be in trouble and rightly so, but my beloved dogs would be subject to being put down.

I am sorry this happened to you but do yourself and the dog a favor and take this for the serious incident that it was. Again, there is simply NO excuse for a dog biting in the situation you describe.

I hope it all ends up being only a hard lesson. I am sure you are very upset and you will probably not like what I just told you, but sugar coating and giving you BS as some here have, does you no favor.

Good luck.

Lovedogs,
I am not an attorney, so I will not give you legal advice.  I can only share my thoughts on this.  First, it is my belief that those stores leave them selves wide open for problems such as this.  Personally I do not take my dogs to them, for many reasons.  It seems to me that if their were going to be a law suit it would be against pet smart for allowing these problems to happen in the first place.  I also disagree to an extent that it is totally your fault.  Pet Smart has to take some owner ship in this issue and any one with half a brain knows that you don't stick your face in a dogs face.

This is a pet smart employee, taught by pet smart and pet smart is responsible for their employees on their property, so I could see a door possibly being open for you to complain about their practices and their irresponsible employees and their lack of proper training, which has now led your dog to bite, which has cause YOU great greif.  If you get the direction I am going with this.

Personally, I would consult and attorney for your own peace of mind but I believe you do have some rights in this case in regards to the trauma that pet smart and their employees have brought on you.

Sueincc says “I do not let strangers pet my dog period end of story. If someone wants to pet a dog they should get their own.”

Sue, I can't ask you to explain your “no stranger pet” policy because thats your choice and your decisions. I will ask you to explain why you suggest someone who only has the intentions to wants to pet a dog (not specifically yours, since you have the “no stranger pet” policy) to get their own. Not everybody could afford to take care of a dog. I seriously hope you made a mistake by even suggesting this because this is such a ridiculous thing to say and that this is an accident waiting to happen that will include a lot of misery on the dogs part.

Brittany:  It is not my job nor my dogs job to help people get their fill of "dog petting".   WTF are you talking about?  Get a clue.

Re read my post I never said I suggest anything to anyone.   The only thing ridiculous here is your usual inability to understand anything related to dogs.

Sue, WTF am I talking about? WTF are you talking about when you said “If someone wants to “pet a dog” they should get their own.” Can you pleas elaborate on the meaning to this? You should be more specific, maybe add the word “my” to your sentence so people such as my self wont be confused.

This goes to show how stupid those employees are... you never put your face in a strange dogs face!  I take my dogs to petco/petsmart but i dont let anyone pet them becuase people are just stupid.  BUT when we got a dog back he needed socializatioin so i took him there to have people feed him and stuff, this idiot got on the floor and started rolling around and talking like a baby to him.

I wouldnt worry to much about whats going to happen, unless your dog has had other incidents they wont put your dog to sleep.

I would just remember this and not let people get that "close" to your dog...

Brittany

Would you let a stranger give your kid a hug?  Hold their hand?

I would assume your answer is no.  Then why let a stranger get into your dog's face?

Would you let a stranger get into your face and talk like a baby waby?
