Birdy, you can buy EVO Red Meat Large Bites on the net - http://www.k9cuisine.com The cost is about the saem as buying it at the store - $62.99 for 28.6 lb bag and the shipping is free on all orders over $50.. They have all the premium foods and lots of healthy treats and so forth. I got my first order in a few days. It beats running all over the county to find dog food.

Nadar, the quality of the dog food really doesn't matter if your dog is allergic to one or more of the ingredients. If he or she is allergic to beef for example, it wouldn't make any difference if it were a hamburger or a filet.

Hi Blitzen,

My dogs fell apart after feeding EVO. I like their regular foods and I can get EVO here for 42.00 but like I said they didn't do well on it.

The Canidae costs me 32.17 for a 40 pound bag. As long as my dogs do well on this food I'm sticking with it.

Blitz didn't handle the EVO Red Meat well either, Birdy, loose stools the entire time he ate it, so he's back on RC and The Honest Kitchen's Embark. Embark is dehydrated and is the most expensive dog food known to man - almost $8.00 per lb dried. A 10 lb bag is said to make about 40 lbs of food after it's reconstituted. He isn't crazy over it although he eats just about anythnig that's put in his dish.  He's liking it better, but the first week the poor dog would look at the Embark in his dish and get the dry heaves  even when I added the meat LOL. Still, he ate it to please me.

Anyway, that site is a good one to order food you can't easily find  where you live. They sell all the Innova products I think plus Origen and some brands  I've never heard of. Not sure about Canidae.

The problem with Canidae like so many other dog foods is they don't manufacture their own food and in most cases don't buy the ingrediants or do the quality control.   The almighty price is the master to most of these companies.

My advice is to find a company that does manufacture their own food. Do a little research and you will be floored at who manufactures a whole lot of the current dog food.  Companies like Menu and Diamond are heavily involved in co-packing agreements with a whole lot of companies.  Just because it says Canidae on the bag does not mean they manufactured the food.

After doing a ton of research I am now feeding my GSD Orijen. But you have to go with what works best for your dog.   But do your homework before you open up the bag that way you won't have any surprises.

Larrydee,

I posed your statement to Canidae verbatum here is their response.

Dear Birdy,

All Canidae products are produced in the USA.  We do not purchase ingredients from any suppliers outside of the US. All Canidae ingredients are grown &/or raised in the USA. In addition, we only purchase the absolute best  USDA grade "A" hormone and antibiotic free meats. Our rice is also grade "A" Pesticide free. Our fish is FDA inspected and passed residual free of ethoxiquin.

Our cannery is a small facility located in IL. and able to produce the highest quality products.  This small family operated facility only produces products that are of the highest quality human grade ingredients. Our formulations were created by an outside nutritionist that has been developing canned foods for over 35 years. You can feel assured by our quality and product performance that our cannery holds the highest standards in production, and is regulated by AAFCO by (NRC), USDA, FDA, IDA, EU Approved and is Organically Certified.

Our dry foods are produced in TX.  Our plant has been involved in animal nutrition for over 75 years. The original pet food extrusion mill was built in 1978. CANIDAE's involvement with the plant sparked the introduction of our own extruder in 1999. Our dry goods facility also regulated by AAFCO by (NRC), USDA, FDA, TDA and EU Approved. We have currently completed production of our very own brand new plant at the same facility to keep up with the growth and demand of our product line.

In order to ensure the highest quality meat based biscuit ever created, we ventured into the biscuit production business in 2003. Our 100 foot oven runs our fresh biscuits daily in a building opposite our extrusion plant in TX.  Our biscuit plant is also regulated by AAFCO by (NRC), USDA, FDA, TDA and EU Approved.

We thank you for your business and placing your pets trust with us.

Sincerely,

Canidae Pet Foods

If you read closely it says they don't own the plant that produces their dry food.   It is the same response they gave me. With a company as big as they are I have no idea why they don't own their own manufacuring plant.

Birdy

Yes, this is true they don't own their own plant but a friend of mine who works for Diamond here in Missouri told me today that the plant they use runs their food exclusively at least the dry food part.

He was also telling me there is another "no name" plant that is churning out a lot of the "designer" foods out there. They are now doing the Solid Gold and Diamond only supplies some of their ingredients. He says he'll tell me who that company is when he finds out for sure but I won't hold my breath as it would mean his job most likely if he did divulge this information.

I am as interested as you to know where the food is made as well.

Birdy

Maybe because Canidae had so many problems and complaints about their food they decided to build a new facility.

It is critical to know who manufactures the food you feed your dog!!

Go to  www.api4animals.org and read the report. What's really in pet food.  This will really make you think twice about who manufactures the food you feed your dog.   This is the report the pet food industry doesn't want you to see.

It even changed the way I buy my own food.

Have been using Orijen now for over 8 months with nothing but good results, beautiful rich coat and nice firm almost odorless poops...No itches, no scratches, nothing but an empty bowl every morning...We feed at night after all activities are over to lessen the chance of bloat...(Thank you Jodie)

By the way i went to K9cuisine.com and they want $62.00 for a 28 lb bag of Orijen where I've been paying $42.00 from day 1 locally and can get that same price almost everywhere they carry it, so as they say; "buyer beware"...

If you ask me Orijen is the best dry dog food available with no slight intended to anyone using whatever works for you...I will never use anything made by Diamond regardless of what "they" might tell you...As always too each their own...The only other dry dog food I would use is Timberwolf Organics which I sometimes use as a "change of pace"...

My girl is Cora von Haus Winheim, she is in the database...

  Rob
