What does Fallon weigh?

Deramaxx is a very good post op pain med.   And that is pretty high of a dose, that it really  should start to make her feel better.   She is probably uncomfortable and some of the pacing could just be her reaction to the anesthetics that were used.  You can try the cone off, but if she starts to really go after the incision she will need to wear it when you can't supervise her.  I only will use the cones if I have to.  As I find them to be very annoying!  I'm actually amazed at how well alot them do after their surgeries.  I had an abdominal incision and it was very very painful!  We've recently switched to giving alot of the dogs Rimadyl post op as it can be given by injection the day of their surgery in addition to the other pain meds that they would give her pre operatively.  Do you know what they gave her today during the spay?

After a couple of days when the worst of the soreness is gone, be careful that the medicine doesn't give her a false sense of wellness. What I mean is if they have pain they tend to be more careful of themselves but can overdo easily if they have the pain med.. Might want to keep her closely supervised and contained.  This is the advice my vet gave me.

As far as the cone goes, there is a really wide collar you can use that is supposed to keep them from reaching behind to lick at the incision. Didn't work for mine but did work to keep the cone from chafing her neck if I used them both at once. I don't remember what it's called, I'm sure some one on here will. If not call valley vet supply's number and talk to them.

When the incision starts to heal Tea Tree Oil is a good disinfectant, helps the incision to heal softer and tastes nasty enough not to lick at. I think it needs to be a closed over incision though.

Good luck with it. I hated it. Needed to be done but hated to see her go through it.

normally they give a post-surgical pain control dose, which is why they say start the pain meds in the morning - she's already had her dose.  But buffered aspirin shouldn't hurt.  My experience with post-spay dogs is they are very tired for a day or two, then bounce right back no problem.

Molly is correct! Your vet probably gave her her dose for the day. DO NOT GIVE ANOTHER ONE until you have confirmed that with your vet.  I don't know where people get off overriding the vet's instructions! TALK TO YOUR VET, not this board full of "know it alls".It can be very dangerous.  The vet I worked for gave a powerful injection for pain post op. and then the milder pills for at home.  We also gave out a post op instructions on paper to take home, which included what is normal and what is not.  PS.. I whined for a day or so after I was spayed too! lol

I would  just  take the collar  off ,,,,that is worrying her and that is most of the problem   you can give her meds earlier in the morning   the vets give them a huge dose and that s why he said wait till morning    if vet should have told you that you could give her a rymadyl or a buffered aspirin.....call him   if he doesnt call you back   welll   wont go there....

I would not give her anything else    unless vet says so.....EMT , the gell from Tractor Supply in a tube is great   my cocker had surgery and she licked and licked so  actuall Abhay on our base told us about it and it worked its  for cattle or any animal and even birds..reptiles   ,    tee tree is good too .    it will itch    take the collar off   but  keep her secluded   she has no business around kids or dogs....kennel her if you are not watching her   in ur wash room or bedroom      she cant be comfortable and she is nervous....give her a knuckle bone to chew   maybe it will take her mind off...  a little bit of licking wont hurt  , its if she chews it like one of mind did years ago  and we had to use a collar....they hate those things....but its better than having infection and eating to the bone   .......or opening the incision back up with her teeth....

I agree with luvmidog, I would rather stay with her and remove the collar.... on a more serious note, and this is not intended to attach thoughts of such to Renofan2s problem, but I have recently been alerted by a good friend to a complication of this op that can be rapidly become fatal, and the symptoms it seems, can be overlooked post operatively.  Have a look at this link, and be very observant for a while after the op.  Hope some find it useful,  http://www.vri.cz/docs/vetmed/50-12-558.pdf

TO RENOFAN2- you have enough to concern youself with, so plesase dont let this worry you, I am not suggesting that your girl is suffering this, just trying to help others on your related thread.

Thanks everyone.  I contacted my vet last night and he said it was ok to start the med's last night.  I took the cone off and with the combination of the meds and "no cone" she finally fell asleep after 12 and seemed to have a good restful night.   Thanks again for all your help, just hate seeing her so uncomfortable.  I will put the cone back on when I am not with her to watch.

Rezkat - if I don't see her licking her wound, is there a time (before the 14 days are up) that you think I could do away with the cone.  My vet recommends keeping it on for 14 days.  I cannot imagine dealing with it for that long.  Also, the med's they gave her yesterday were Morphine Sulf Inj 15m/ml 2 each, Atropine Sulfate Inj 2 each, Ketamine 100 mg3 each, Diazepam (Valium) 3 each, Isaflurane 1 each, Metacam Inj - 1.4 each,   She weighed in at 77.5 lbs.

the cone should be left on anytime you can't supervise her, at least until the stitches are healed (10 days or so).  Why- because the surgery is a major one, they entered her abdomen and removed her uterus - and if she did lick or manage to remove stitches she could be in major trouble (disembowled at the worst) - anything entering her abdomen including even air could cause major life-threatening infection.  So, best to leave the cone on.

Aye me old first mate Pete always helped me close me eaye when he sang t' me. Sin this t' your little lass and see if it doesn't calm her. When we hoist Jolly Roger t' landlubbers dodge 'er, We fill 'em with loathin' and fear, We'll plunder and pillage each city and village, Or at least clean out Wal-Mart o' beer
