i agree with the fact that people do not know how to exercise the crap out of their dogs!

a walk around the block does not cut it!

i find that since my dogs get regular work that they do not require intense daily exercise.

I think any dog, any breed, can live in whatever space you want to live in if you are a good enough handler. People put wayyyy too much good faith in physical excercise. Physical excercise is neccessary, but an hour of good training will wear out your dog just as much and enrich them mentally also.

The border collie reference rung a bell to me. I fostered, on and off, for over a year, a border with fear aggression problems. He was a clients dog that was going to be put down but I saw the good in him. At the time we rented a tiny townhome and had no yard. My daughter took him to obedience class 3 times a week. We bent over backwards to socialize him. He turned around marvelously and did a hell of a lot better in our home than he did in the big house with the huge yard  where the family couldnt handle him. You couldve run that dog 3 hours a day and it wouldnt have made a difference at all.

The only down side of the apartment thing is, your neighbors will get pissed if you have a barker. Fortunately for me, I was able to live in a 2 bedroom townhome with 3 GSD's, 1 border collie, and at one point a little of 5 pups- but I bring my dogs to work with me every day.

The limitation here has nothing to do with the dog, but rather YOUR individual situation and handling skills.

Just a thought...the more excersize, the better condition, the more energy....the more need for excersize, etc., etc., etc. jo

My neighbors wonder I load up my dogs and take them to a farm for exercise.  I do obedience with them, throw the balls with the chuckits, do agility and just wear them out.  Twice a day.  Plus formal training twice a week for several hours.  They ask "Why don't you just take them for a walk?"  The answer is simple.  They're German Shepherds. Duh.

I had 2 German Shepherds years ago when my ex-husband was in the military and we lived in an apartment in Germany with them with no problems.  So I say yes you can live in an apartment with most dogs.
