I have to say, just looking at a dog it is very difficult to know if it is a good weight. These dogs are in a cold climate, and have what appears to be a lot of hair. You might be surprised to feel a very bony dog under all that hair. And, if I had a nursing mama, that had poops that looked like the one, I think in picture number six or so, she would be off to the vets immediately how can she possibly be in good health nursing and losing so many nutrients....and I agree that people speculate so much then it becomes fact, until you know the real truth the dogs are in a better place, a MUCH better place. The pictures made me sick...

There is actually a specific chart to determine the terminology for describing dogs in a hoarding situation. It is called the: Tufts Animal Care and Condition (TACC) scales for assessing body condition, weather and environment safety, and physical care in dogs*. I would imagine any humane group or rescue involved in dog seizures would certainly be familiar with such a standard? I doubt if they are preparing for court, they would waste time with frivolous characterizations.

Hundmutter,
Nice try.
However, I don't believe this was a short-termed calamity that snowballed, at all. Pretty much too, I disregard the idea and creativity that drimeijn has woven with their musings, merely because I don't ever leave my animals in a situation where they are forced to defecate in their living area because I neglected them for a ten hour period. I have witnessed a truly talented and compassionate dog person in rescue, caring for dozens of dogs. She uses crates as a refuge and not a holding zone for extended periods of time. It becomes obvious then, one learns as the dog does, that a dog who poops in the crate as a habit, has learned it has no other choice. And I am speaking about a generally healthy type of dog population. Let's take a moment and speculate as to what a touch of sickness, as in tell-tale bloody poops becomes in this situation, as we see it documented. The thought exhausts me thinking about it.

OMFG i just got to a PC and not my phone internet - saw the pics - i agree this siezure was wrong and poorly executed, they are way LATE on this and did not even TAZER the owner 17 times in the eye just for practice.
why are people still defending this poor poor women, who was so unlawfully detained on trumped up charges just so the shit could build up in the crates just so the "good ol boys" could STEAL her dogs, oh the poor, poor women, such a victim of the big bad government left wing AR liberal commie scum trying to take away the freedom of law abiding american citizens one dog at a time, then they will disarm the popualtion and hell what next free health-care for poor people??
who are all these new posters jumping on these threads on the various dog forums - see the pattern; hold this up as an abuse of power referenced to an attack on individual freedom + create doubt with the legality of the sieazure + doubt about evidence + postulate some conflicting interpretations of the case based on hearsay + attack the credibility & ethics of the rescue org......the fallacies and propaganda tools are all here, so shit all of it.
if dawn owned say 3 untitled happy pet quality dogs and was breeding 1 litter every 2 marketting to the pet crowd every so called "reputable" GSD breeder on the internet would be publicly and mercilessly stomping her guts out, but hey she spent a lot of time smooching around the show circuit and has titled dogs with nice peds and bang she is a victim of governmental abuse of power...WTF

I so do not have all the experience or knowledge of all of you but ask as naive as this may sound, show the judge the papers. if your name is on the papers as co owner, then it should be a simple conclusion. The papers should tell the story. Show the judge the ownership papers and end this nonsense.

the co-owners or co-investors, i doubt many have ever seen these dogs in person.

Well momma,
That is one of the weirder parts of this whole deal. Most experienced GSD breeders who would be showing at the level this Dawn V. did, well, one would expect all the show dogs to be chipped and/or tattoo'd. It is very odd that their alleged, rightful owners give no reason for not identifying their own dogs.
I understand any dogs listed in poor condition per that chart I posted would need to be retained as evidence. Well, are they? Or, did some sort of just get dispersed in a vague way? And I also agree that any one claiming ownership, who provides proof of chips or tattoos, would negate SPCA claims to them as their property. That is the proof that should result in them being rightfully, returned. Sounds pretty cut and dry, doesn't it?

"I would never do it to one of my dogs, but it would be interesting to see what a small crate with a large Shepherd in it looked like after 34 hours or so. They can poop alot...and when it is tracked down and they dig at the cage, I am guessing it would get dried and caked on pretty quickly."
Bullshit.
Bullshit.

Once a long time ago, I took into my home a dog that was deprived of social contact, exercise and love. She was said to have been found at a breeder up to her knees in excrement. She was adopted at 2 years of age and was a dog that required a lifetime of rehabilitation. When I got her she had never known grass. We did a lot over the years. She achieved a lot for what she was capable. She was very smart and behaved sometimes feral. We lived 12 years together that always required special consideration for her. I see the dogs in the pics as special needs dogs that require a special hand. I have trouble picturing people just out to take these dogs as assets. A dog deprived of human care and socialization cannot be put into just a pet home. I hope all get loving homes that will be able to cover up the lack that they had. It takes commitment to do so. Brave new owners wanting to make a difference in just one life.
I am so sad to see the conditions in which these dogs were kept.

I would like to comment regarding a dog getting filthy, quickly. I left my beautiful, rescue german shepherd at the kennel at the vets for two days due to an emergency. He has stomach issues and is prone to diarrhea and can lose weight very quickly on his already small frame.
unbeknownst to me, the kennel wasn't run by my vet but by a third party who merely ran their kennel in the same building.
When I went to pick up my boy two days later, there was a weird wait and the staff was acting very funny. After 20 minutes I demanded they bring him out immediately. What came up to me was not recognizable as my dog. He was soaking wet and covered in dry and wet poop, his eyes and ears were red, he was shaking and quivering, and had lost 4-5 pounds. Gums were white and he was extremely dehydrated. The staff member had put him in the wrong side of the kennel, the side only used for overflow, and they had forgotten he was there the whole time. He doesn't bark or whine and they never went to the other room to check.
needless to say, we never went back and I was furious that my vet let this person masquerade as part of his business. It took 2 hours to get all the poop out of his fur and a week to gain some weight back.
if the police had seen him at that moment when I picked him up, they would have thought he had been abused for a long time.
