Agreed about the mother. The thing I point out though seem to be consistent, no matter who the mother is. I have not quite figured out what I am looking for on the mother side.
I know what you mean about agility. I am trying out my lab mix starting next week in agility training. He is Cirberus on steroids in the energy and drive area. We will see if I can keep up.

Just on the thought of the looks idea or confirmation, I haved liked some looks better than others and some are on the larger side of things that I personaly like, but once again soo much depends on what the dam brings to the table, but he does have some lookers and I have always liked Bi-colors when they show up in litters.

@ Black Mal I,m with you the strength of the female is sooooo very important, some of the reasons the males are looked at so closely might be because if they happen to be very nice males and are producing far above averge then every breeder that uses them will have to examine them very closely under the microsope to see if they are even breed worthy to be used with the top working females in ones breeding program, another reason might be is over the life of a Top male he will be used with more females than the other way around,in other words a male has a great influence on the betterment or degrading of the breed in the long term sence its possible many females will be used with the same male.
